Bob Knight is set to join his iconic 1976 team inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

Indiana announced plans Monday evening for the commission of a bronze statue of the legendary basketball coach.  It will be displayed in the South lobby of the building where he led the Hoosiers to three national titles.

“I know he wasn’t into that type of stuff. It’s really not for him, per se. It’s for the players, the managers, the fans, the assistants. When they asked me, there was no question about it." — Pat Knight on the statue of his father Bob Knight that is coming to Assembly Hall.

I really like that thinking with this statue.

This should help get everyone back to remembering RMK as a great coach, who also did a lot of good.  As we know, after 2000, at IU the discourse with him was mostly about the rift with the university and his flaws (he was human).  That doesn't need to be dwelled upon anymore.  His return to IU really helped and this should keep helping.

For me, I think he was the greatest college basketball coach of all time.  Importantly, he played by the rules, which eliminates several other coaches from taking that honor.  He won consistently and he won big.  His players loved him.  He was often unselfish and would help people.  He was genuinely funny.

May as well remember all the positives, there are plenty.

The amount of money he raised for the school to do all kinds of building projects and scholarships is not normally mentioned which is crazy.  A statue of The General in the corridor and the floor after McKracken seems appropriate.  I hope they have ideas of what Cigs statue will look like when it gets done in the next 15 years or so.
