Stevie Boy Wonder Fired at UCLA

Recommended Posts

Ask fans at Iowa their opinion of Alford.  Ask UCLA fans.

Think about this:  Indiana fans were obviously very brutal to Mike Davis.....and when he came back a couple of years ago as a visiting coach, he was given a very warm reception.  Steve Alford will never receive that reception at Iowa or UCLA.

If you don't advance the program OR demonstrate positive traits as an individual, people remember that.  Alford is welcome back at Missouri State and New Mexico because he exceeded their expectations in terms of wins....he didn't do that at Iowa and UCLA.  If you do that AND you are demonstrate low character, the fan base has no use for you (rightly so).

He did win the Big 10 tournament in ‘01 & ‘06. So there’s that.
Sure would be good to crack that 20 year curse this year. We’ve only made it to the final once in 20 years and who beat us??.....Alford’s Hawkeyes! Despicable.
Let’s win it this year and take that juice in to the dance!
GO HOOSIERS!!!!

IMHO, I never really count conference tournament championships more than anything as extra wins.  The committee has shown they really do much with them in terms of seeding.

It was before I was born as well, Cheaney and Bailey were a few months before I was born. But people should still want to see him succeed. A lot of coaches do questionable things. You can be mad at him for what the things he decided to do yet watch the NFL and be happy.

Um, no. What he did at Iowa is beyond disgusting and wrong. I couldn't care one way or another if he succeeds, just because he played here doesn't mean I should want him to succeed.

Yeah, people might want to go read the report from Iowa about the entire incident and the role Alford played in it. Sickening.

And for years, he continued to defend the way he handled it. Even after he went to UCLA, he did so. Then, after people started to look into what really happened and hammered him on it, he walked it back -- slightly.

Indiana had a better season overall. Louisville was just hot and it caught the eye of the committee.

Do you just make stuff up and hope it’s right?

They we’re 29-5 going into the tourney we were 27-7. They were 15-5 in Quad 1 and 2 games with no quad 2 or below losses. We were 10-6 in the same set of games with a quad 2 loss.

We played too many cupcakes in the non con and the **** the bed in the tourney when we needed to pick up another quality win.

IU wasn’t even the 2nd #1 seed that year Kansas was. IU was 3rd on the S-Curve and rightfully so.

We ended up #3 because we lost in the Big Ten tourney. If there weren’t conference tourneys, Indiana would have been the #1 overall seed.

No it isn’t the reason. We went 5-4 in our last 9 before the tournament. No matter what Louisville was going to be the one seed. They had a better record against good teams. Were hot last month of the year. Best spot we could of got was 2. They had won 10 of 11 going into their conference tournament. 5-4 down the stretch doesn’t get you the overall top seed.

Edit: Louisville beat the 19th and 24th ranked team in their conference tournament. That isn’t a needle mover.

Quads weren’t even a thing at the time. Our worst loss that season was what? Illinois? Minnesota? Butler? All tourney teams. While Louisville’s worst loss was to Villanova who missed the tourney that year. That and we beat Michigan State twice and Michigan twice. Louisville got the #1 overall seed because of the Big East tourney. That is the reason. The committee puts a ton of emphasis on the conference tourneys. It can make or break a season for almost every team in the nation. It can be the difference between getting in or being left out. Being a 1 seed in your own region or even being a 2 seed outside your region.

Not a thing but still a great way to rate a teams schedule. Villanova did not miss the tourney they were a 9th seed.

Playing 17 teams out of 33 games that are bad enough to now be quad 3 or 4 kinda gives you no margin of error. Then losing 6 of the other 16 does not get you the number 1 overall seed.

Nothing to do with it being a tourney. Just yet another loss to a good team. Had we gone undefeated and lost in the tourney we would have been the 1 seed. As I believe Kentucky showed the previous year. They had 2 losses one in the tourney.

In the last ten games that year Louisville beat #25 Marquette, Rutgers, loss at #25 Notre Dame, beat St. John’s, South Florida, Seton Hall, DePaul, #12 Syracuse, Cincinnati and #24 Notre Dame before the Big East tourney.
Indiana beat #1 Michigan, lost at Illinois, beat #10 Ohio State, Nebraska, Purdue, #4 Michigan State, lost at Minnesota, beat Iowa, lost to #14 Ohio State and then won at #7 Michigan. In the last 8 games we won AT Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan. Indiana was clearly the best team that season. We just got screwed by a dumbass on the sidelines.

You aren’t just judged by the teams you beat. You are judged by your losses. We had more against quality teams despite playing fewer than U6

The conference tourney is about as important as the regular season to the committee. The reason Indiana didn’t get the overall #1 in 13’.

Lol the committee doesn’t put a ton of emphasis on conference tournaments. Not even close. They treat every game in a conference tournament like a neutral conference game. They are very upfront going through a mock selection(like I have done) that a game in November is just as important as a game in March. Your whole body of work is what matters. FWIW conference records are not shown on a team sheet.

At one point, this was a thread about Steve Alford -- love him or hate him or somewhere in between -- getting fired from UCLA. Now, it's a debate about conference tournaments and NCAA bids and whether we were better than Louisville the year they did/didn't win the tournament. Given the track record of threads on this site, it's not surprising but seriously -- WTF???

All because I mentioned Alford’s Hawkeyes beat us in the only B1G Championship final that we’ve ever been in in the 20 year history of the tournament..... then it veered off into how much conference tournament wins count....LOL!

Alford beating us was hard to swallow!

GO HOOSIERS!! NO SLOW START TONIGHT!!!!
