FearMcCracken Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Seems like the Marian game went like most cupcake games on the Crean era. The underdog team comes out on fire and IU is behind at the 5-minute mark. IU goes on the run and has a semi-comfortable lead at halftime. IU comes out flat in the second half and the underdog team cuts it to single digits. IU goes on another run in wins by at least 25. Waiting to see Miller’s teams have more of a killer instinct than Crean’s teams had. Quote

mdn82 Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 It's an exhibition game. Popular Post Class of '66 Old Fart Posted November 5, 2017 Popular Post Posted November 5, 2017 I'll be more concerned if that's the tendency after we get 5 or 6 games into the season. My thought is that if they come out flat at the start of either half, Archie will be much quicker to start subbing. I think the Archie leash will be significantly shorter than was his predecessor's. KB0 Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 You see this a lot across all sports. Smaller, underdog school comes out as hard as possible trying to prove a point and show they belong. Eventually the team with the better talent and depth pulls away. Getting worried about an exhibition game is....strange. Think MSU is worried after their mediocre display? Seems you see it ever year in the 1vs 16 matchups in the NCAA. 16 gets a lead for a part of the 1st half before the top seed gets going. lillurk 1 Quote

This is a good argument for talented teams to play faster and vice versa: more possessions should widen the gap. Quote
HoosierCoop Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 Just the simple fact that Miller made a point on playing too fast and took rushed shots is good enough for me. That is the stuff you want to pull out of an exhibition and work on. Quote
Trish Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 From a coaching perspective, there's numerous reasons why these pre-season games are meaningful and useless at the same time. I wouldn't take too much into account from these first two games. It's a new coach with players he didn't recruit to be apart of his system. The boys are all learning brand new things perhaps and there's an adjustment period, especially when you're going up against someone new every week instead of just your teammates / practice squad. Furthermore, I will say I'm not expecting this team to be THAT great. I think we will make the dance, but I'm not expecting us to be something special. I'd say we have overachieved if we survive the first weekend. ebridges24 1 Quote

Popular Post Old Friend Posted November 6, 2017 Popular Post Posted November 6, 2017 Archie Miller is a combination of old school and modern day coaching. I think his teams will generally win the way Knight's teams did; starting on the defensive end and being efficient offensively. They'll play 40 minutes and just be very difficult to beat, especially given equal talent. I don't expect huge runs or lots of lights-out shooting-style blowouts. When we beat a team badly, it'll be because we're opportunistic defensively, run effectively, and take/make good shots consistently. Crean's teams tried to make up for excessive turnovers by taking bad shots in volume. Those days are over. I expect 40 minutes of far more efficient basketball which will at times look like we're grinding; especially this year. I expect a few 58-55 type games this season. Over time, we'll get better; but if anyone expects huge runs either way on a consistent basis, I think that'll be rare for now. As we get more talented, I think our offense will produce them, and our defense won't allow very many. ALASKA HOOSIER, Dalton26, GloryDays and 12 others 15 Quote
