Agreed. Also not a fan of the ND football/IU basketball folks. I know plenty of ND football fans that don’t care at all about ND basketball.

Some Indiana kids grow up with no allegiances to any school. So they grow up rooting for the local big programs. That creates IU basketball and ND football fans. I don't understand why that faction of the fanbase gets hated on.

I'm diehard IU all sports fan. In any other game I'm rooting for an Indiana school except Purdoo. Is that wrong? Because I don't want to be right.

I grew up, since the '50's, an IU basketball fanantic. I went to ISU and then to IU for grad school (1976). I most hated Kentucky and Purdue. The difference for me was that, while I disliked Purdue, I at least respected them. They were like that brother-in-law that you just couldn't stand but were still family. In Kentucky's case, there was nothing to even respect.

Can't stand them? Wow. Those are your neighbors. One of nicest, down to earth, humble  doctors I know is a ND alumn and fan. Honestly, one of the best men I've ever met. I don't like ND football.

1) I don’t live in Indiana, not am I from there and 2) I was speaking hyperbolically, and how is that any different that saying I can’t stand Purdue fans or Kentucky fans.

Come to think of it, this is a very “Domer”-like response. Indignant to the idea that they could be disrespected or looked down upon.

One of my best friends went to Purdue, and I have a few friends who went to ND. Still can’t stand them as fans. [emoji854]

Not indignant. Just find it amusing fans are putting down others in their own fan base. then are saying they can't stand other fans. I don't like PU athletics but I have fun bantering with their fans. It's what makes rivalries fun. Never understood the can't stand hyperbole.

You’re reading entirely too far into it. Just because you can’t stand someone’s fandom has nothing to do with them as a person. I have friends who are UK fans and Purdue graduates and I can’t stand them rooting for those teams/talking about their sports teams like they’re god. Doesn’t mean I don’t like them as a person or I’m not friends with them.

Sincere question, are you an ND football fan?

Well, I think the answer to the original question is shown by the fact that UI isn't even mentioned in most of the replies.  I think they (UI) confuse rival with teams you hate.

As for football, I'm kind of like the OP - I don't really follow any team closely.  I try to watch IU football if I'm not busy, but 40 years of striving for mediocrity hasn't encouraged me to be invested in the program.  If the administration and A.D. would finally get serious about the actual building of a competitive team (and not just on facilities), i.e. do whatever it takes to lure a proven big time coaching staff,  I might finally be seriously excited.  If Northwestern can do it, there's no reason IU can't.

Who would we call our basketball rivals?

1 and 2 are Purdue and Kentucky.

Who makes 3-5? Syracuse? Louisville? Michigan? Ohio State? MSU? Butler? Notre Dame?

I am more in the party of the location of where you live also has a factor on who you consider a bigger rival.  Obviously, UK and Purdouche are unchallenged 1 and 2 (although, I would put Purdue at 1 instead of Kentucky); however, growing up in Ohio, I always thought of OSU as more of a rival to Indiana than Illinois...

I agree about Illinois and have told them the same thing.

I lived in the southwestern part of the state, so it was UK #1 and Illinois was a bigger annoyance than OSU to me.
