Not really. Archie clearly wants him

Not correct.  I think he'd probably take him eventually but to say "Archie clearly wants him" is an overstatement.

I mean we've offered two new point guards since the second part of the July evaluation period alone.  He has yet to really play well in front of the staff.  Archie is trying to see if we can do better.

I think those other offers are strictly to entice Phinisee to pull the trigger for IU. That's my view

I'm leaning towards this as well. At some point he has to say "commit or we are going to move on to other kids". I think that is what we are seeing now.

Exactly. And CAM doesn't just hop on cross-country flights to LA for some kid he's only mildly interested in. He wants RP to commit NOW. Doesn't mean he won't get recruited over (DG), but he's a solid in-state kid with decent upside and absolutely a 4-yr PG.

I wonder what Painter thought when he seen Coach walk in out at LA. Poor little brother.

"Commit now or we're moving on" is an interesting approach to me. I think it'd be good to use with guys around RP's talent level. He's a solid recruit but he's not irreplaceable. Dragging out his recruitment while other quality pg's go elsewhere and then ending up not getting him would be awful. This way we either get him now or we move on without wasting our time and losing out on other players.

I agree and it shows Indiana HS coaches we are often offering Indiana kids first but if they don't want to come we will then move on.

My thoughts exactly. RP knows the program well enough and has talked with Archie plenty. Give him a deadline to commit by and then move on with or without him.

A perspective on RP that I'm not seeing mentioned very much: if Robert Phinisee were to commit to Butler, Purdue, O$U, would he be a thorn in our side for 4 years? I say yes.

Lots of talk about him having some undisclosed nagging injuries this summer. That could be why we are seeing his mediocre play this year. When the games count, he's a big time performer and more importantly a winner.

Id be excited with his commitment.

He would absolutely be a thorn in the side every single matchup. This would be a good get

Is he as good as Mark Smith as example? Mark Smith plays for crappy Illinois. I guess he'll be a thorn in our sides for 4 years as well. My point is there are bigger thorns out there, even at schools like Illinois.

If we get him (RP) I'll cheer him on like any other Hoosier, if we don't there's plenty of other thorns to be worried about.

Joel Berry, an inch taller than RP was this years final four MVP. Coming out Berry was a 4 star recruit ranked between 30 and 100 whereas RP is still a 4 star he is lower ranked than Berry was.

We don't necessarily need RP to play like a final four MVP but his height and ranking are similar. Berry was a junior last year and will be a senior this year.

Whether RP rises to that level I love the idea of getting 4 star guys that will likely stay 4 years and to be able to reap the benefits when they are upperclassmen

I know you're skeptical on him. There are some bigger fish to fry in that class going by rankings. That's a valid point. However, Rob will prove you wrong. I have complete faith in Archie to choose the right player

6'1" vs 5'11"

And comp #30 vs. #114

Otherwise yeah.

I hope we land Hinton. It sounds like he comes from a high quality family and I like his swagger. Plus he's 6'6. If Archie moves on from RP I hope he makes a strong push for Hinton.

Either way, there's no doubt Archie is getting a PG in 2018. That's the right decision too

I have faith in Archie too. Doesn't mean Rob Phinisee is Van Vleet or Frank Mason or Joel Berry.

He is a good player. I am not saying he isn't.

It'll be interesting to me to watch. I could see him being a good piece, just not the answer anytime soon.
