Player and Recruit Retention News/Discussion & Potential Transfers

Recommended Posts

Lemme see if I understand your points from your last couple posts:

1) You don't want Crean's players on the floor, but;

2) Gelon and Priller should play more (let's ignore they were Crean's players), in place of;

3) Two players with the potential to be All B1G next year, Thomas Bryant and Rob Johnson, who you think should;

4) Leave the team for a year to readjust their attitudes while sitting on the bench somewhere fulfilling their transfer obligation, and then;

5) Return to Indiana to sit on the bench for another year to fulfill their transfer obligation, at which point Bryant and Johnson will have surpassed their alotted 5 years to play 4 seasons, meaning both will be ineligible to continue playing college basketball.

Let me know if I missed anything.

A good overview article from the Crimson Quarry.

Very hot take on Keion Brooks, which will be added to his thread.

WOW, I didnt realize Schilling and the Brooks family were close. I'm loving that hire more and more.

There isn't much video on Moore but from what I watched it looks like he needs to add weight and strength and get more physical. Alot of jump hooks and turn around fade aways. I'll be interested to see what kind of PT he gets next season.

Strength probably won't ever be a big part of his game but in one of the more recent pictures of him it looks like he's put on a little bit of mass. With a summer or two in Bloomington he should be fine from a physical standpoint.

All 3 recruits seem to be saying the same thing about their meetings with Archie. He doesn't care if what he says isn't what you want to hear, he's gonna keep it real. I think the guys all like that.

It's definitely a breath of fresh air. Players, and recruits in particular, like honesty. They want to know the plan from day one. Recruits don't want it to change up when they get on campus. And that is something that demands a great deal of respect

I've said this before and I'll say it again: Archie knows. ... He has to know who's staying and who's going or have a very, very good indication of such. Otherwise, he would've just let Moore or Durham go. They wanted out of their LOIs and if we were to remain oversigned, the easy thing would be to just release them. But he worked hard to keep them. That tells me he's pretty hip to the scholly situation and knows how it will play out.

Bryant and jbj are gone imo.

He reminds me of a lot of Jon Leuer. Leuer rose the ranks immensely (literally from projected decent DIII ball player to high D-I) between his Sophomore and Senior years in HS but was less than 200 lbs. at 6'10". He tacked around 40 lbs. of muscle in college at UW and was a power in the B1G by his senior year. He is now the sixth man for Pistons and makes nearly $11M per year.

Not saying Clifton will live up to that comparison but his rise from relative unknown to the target of many high-major programs is similar to Leuer's and body types are almost identical. Clifton seems to have a lot of untapped potential as Leuer did so let's hope he has a similar path!

I would love to have Tom and JBJ back. Talent wise, they are at the top of this team. They are also a part of the prior culture that Archie is trying to change. Easiest way to do that is without the previous star players IF they aren't able to adapt to change. Blackmon has been the same type of player at both ends for 7 years (minus obvious injury time). Tom I don't know on. I didn't watch him in HS. Both want to be a pro. They both have learn how to play defense. I think one goes and the other comes back.

Just taking a look at the top ranked players of next years class and just imagine if Archie could get both Garland and Romeo, or Phinisee and Romeo. I think this place would be down for a week. lol

Garland and Romeo would blow this place up. That's Duke, puke, ucla, or Arizona type recruiting. If Smith has a huge frost to sophomore leap that would be an incredible starting 5 (Garland, Langford, Smith, Morgan, and Davis) and a good guard rotation (Green, Jones, and Durham).

We'll lose three guards over the next year. Replacing them with Garland, Langford, and Phinisee would be excellent. I just don't see it working out unless Jones and Green are willing to wait until their seniors to start, Durham is patient, and Phinisee will play third fiddle for a few years.

If we only have room for one of the two I hope we get Bryant back. I have nothing against JBJ and I would love for him to come back for his senior year, but I think TB is the one that's more likely to buy-in to Archie's system. He seems like a kid that really wants to be coached and I think he was done a disservice last year by whoever decided to turn him into a wing. Plus we would have a lot of frontcourt depth if he came back which is always nice.

I'd be thrilled with just getting one of them, I guess I'm just having big dreams today lol

I dont see either of them wanting to wait that long to start unfortunately.

I wasn't talking about scholarship numbers. I was talking about Moore red shirting. I believe he said in an interview that CAM wanted him to redshirt and he wasn't fond of it. Does him recommitting mean he's willing to redshirt?

I think if CAM pushed redshirting then Moore went elsewhere.  By honoring his commitment, I think CAM made it clear there would be no redshirt which further suggests to me CAM expects TB to leave and thus Moore will see plenty of minutes as a freshman backing up DD.

I could see Morgan or Hartman getting time backing up DD as well. There's not too many backup bigs in the B1G.

I think this is far more likely than Clifton being our "big."  It's not a role he wants to do, or really can do right now.  Morgan and Hartman are both willing to mix it up in there a little more.  I agree, if TB leaves, we're going to be very thin in the middle.

100% this. JBJ is who he is. A dynamic shooter. Never been a defensive stopper at any level.

TB just needs the right guidance. He was phenomenal in HS. All motor, heart, hustle. His footwork didn't hurt him as much because of his enormous size and length could make up for sloppy footwork.

TB under the right guidance could be a force for us. This whole Crean dribble drive offense with TB was ludicrous. Trying to turn TB into a wing player for the NBA. TB is a big. He can shoot. Pick and pops and pick and rolls. Get him to stay home on defense too, so he is in better position to help defend dribble drives.

I want TB back.

Excited to see Devonte get more run at guard anyway.

I've said it many times and I'll say it again. Thomas Bryant would have a resurgence under Archie. The most important difference would be Archie would put Bryant at his natural position. Why Crean tried to make him a wing is beyond my comprehension. Put his @$$ in the post like freshman year and Bryant will once again be a beast
