Hovadipo Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 I think you have it backwards. Offense will keep you in a game (as evidence by our Hoosiers) defense will lose you a game (also evidenced by our Hoosiers). It's nice to be sable to drop 90 points every night but if you give up 91 who cares. You have to be able to make the big stops in a right game to win. Bennett may not have a flashy offense but as others have noted, they are efficient. I think he would do fine the the B1G where his style is better suited. The following picture may be irrelevant, but over the last 10 years, 5 winners have scored under your 70 number and 5 above it and all have been fairly close games with the exception of a few, suggesting The team that was able to make defensive stops when it mattered pulled it out. That 2011 title game. Woof. Fell asleep in the middle of the first half, woke up with about 2 minutes left in the second, and was not mad about it. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners Quote

Although it is NAIA Division II, the guy has proven he can coach and win. He also has been successful in getting kids with D1 scholarships/opportunities to come play NAIA ball. As far as up and coming Coaches, seems like he should be right at the top of the list IMO. In his 11 season as a head coach, Tonagel has already led Indiana Wesleyan to two national championships (2014 & 2016), five Elite Eight finishes, and eight Crossroads League regular season championships, including seven straight from 2009-15. Tonagel's teams have spent time in the NAIA top-five in each of the last 10 seasons and he was National Coach of the year twice. Despite being a head coach for only 11 seasons, Tonagel is already the winningest coach in the program’s history. He has the highest winning percentage (.784), most wins (301), most postseason victories (21), most national tournament appearances (9), and most Crossroads League regular season championships (8). Prior to his current position, Tonagel served as Director of Basketball Operations at Valparaiso University, where he played in four NCAA Tournaments. He also led his LaPorte High School team to the last single class state finals in 1997 I beg to differ on the last part that I put in bold. My Alma Mater (Delta) made it to the championship game by beating LaPorte and lost to Bloomington North. Link to the article http://www.ibj.com/articles/62676-lopresti-delta-was-last-small-high-school-to-experience-single-class-magic which is a pretty good read on the end of single class basketball in Indiana. Jeff_Boy_Ardee Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 I understand what you're trying to say, and not trying to sound argumentative or anything like that, I do respect your thinking. I would just like to add that it's not easy to win a championship anywhere, outside the regulars, I would say Bennett has a better chance than most. Out of the last 20 years there have only been 10 different programs to win it all, 14 in the last 30 years. Those numbers may be have by 1-2 but for the most part, out of 64 teams the same few programs win it almost 50% of the time. But we can all go back and forth in different views and opinions all day and no one is really wrong. Hopefully the end of the season will have the answer to all of our prayers and we can all begin to argue when and where the party will take place. Hoosier Guy 1 Quote

Tony Bennett has had great success at Virginia and is a GREAT coach. He really is. His Virginia teams have been some of the most fundamentally sound in NCAA basketball the last 4 years (including this year). I would take Stevens, Donovan and Archie in that order before Bennett. That's not a slight considering the first two aforementioned coaches. I used to be torn on Bennett and Archie but I give the nod to Archie because of the potential. I think Archie Miller is gonna be outstanding wherever he goes. I'm not slighting Tony Bennett but I would take Stevens, Donovan and Archie before him Quote
