I’m very interested in the tempo side. This team — including according to the players themselves— is built to get out and run and gun. I don’t think looking at last year’s WV team is apples to apples. I think the pace will be on the faster end - we’ll see

I’m interested in seeing all of it. I can try and make some educated guesses on what we’ll see but I wouldn’t feel confident in any of them. There’s just not much in a consistent analytic footprint for CDD. I think I would agree with you though that we’ll be close to upper 1/3rd in tempo. Just a hunch.

I want to see all 5 guys on the court working together to get the BEST shot, not running offense to showcase the offensive skills of certain players. Play for others, make the extra pass, extra cut. I think we'll see that. Build from there! I liked Malik, as well, it's too bad he didnt have a coach to hold him accountable.

Creighton under McDermont has had some good defensive teams. Oddly he kind of goes back and forth on which side is better… like CDD’s teams in terms of what is more efficient, offense or defense. So I’m not even sure what that’d mean to look like Creighton next year. It could be anything, from an analytics perspective, so long as they’re well coached. Worst Creighton has been is 44th on D in the last 5 years, but that was last year when they were 32nd in offense and only managed a 9 seed. In 2022 Creighton was 112 in OffE and 19 in DefE. That would completely subvert expectations if we looked like that next year. Similarly, I doubt we look like Alabama because of tempo. Alabama hasn’t been less than 14th in AdjTempo the last 4 yrs and they were 1st last year. CDDs teams were pretty avg-ish in tempo. WVU was 331st last year. That’s UW/Virginia levels of tempo. I really wont be surprised by anything next year, as there isn’t much of an analytic footprint to match up with the conventional wisdom on this years roster. I subscribe to the philosophy of “you are what you can guard” so if you’re the 5 and can’t guard other team’s primary post, then it’s hard to be effective in big mins, imo. I have watched as much of Bailey as I have Sisley and Dorn, so it’s all academic to me. I doubt (hope) CDD would recruit a guy that he didn’t think could defend his position at this level, so I’m not worried. I’m just stating that is the prevailing concern, and the reports from the single practice didn’t do anything to make that concern less of one. I mean…it’s the preseason. I hope Bailey is the next Bill Russell and have no data points to say one way or the other.

For me, as long as we get 8 wins this year I think we keep our upward momentum. Improvement isn’t always a straight line as we know. Fewer wins than that and we’re dropping some games we really should win and we’ll fall out of the national discussion with pressure to bounce back in year three of Cig. I get why there would be comparisons to former coaches, but Hep (whose time was cut short sadly) and Wilson never had a season close to last year. Allen had one exceptional non-Covid year… turns out we had Alabama’s future HC and DC as our coordinators! (lol - that still cracks me up) I don’t think Cig’s success is coordinator-driven, though of course staff continuity is important and IU is doing a great job there. IU’s current support of football is light years ahead of where it was for previous coaches. Last year was literally unbelievable. Inherit a team with three total conference wins in three years, get one transfer portal and modest #35 or so NIL to adjust the 100 man roster, and finish top-10 in the CFP. I didn’t think it was possible. A lot of talking heads ask who is this year’s Indiana? Then they name a bunch of teams that are starting from way better points than we did. In reality, the only team this year starting from a similar spot to where we did is Purdue. We’ll see how that goes… And after last season recruiting picked up. We beat out UGA and Miami for Fernando, and both those schools have way more money than us. Since when has IU ever done that? CFB is uber competitive and cutthroat and it won’t be easy, there will be bumps in the road. But IUFB is in the best position it’s ever been in. No guarantees of course, but I think after 30 years of struggling with our FB and MBB coaches, we’ve got a great one on our hands worth getting really excited for. Fingers crossed.

I watched last year knowing Woodson was 99% dead man walking as a coach last year, and it felt like it didn't matter. I am ready to watch some meaningful games.

A sort of meaningless / petty observation from me ... it always felt like these kinds of videos for Woody's teams were super edited with music and overly produced with things like graphic effects / slow motion. Like, the video team had to work hard to make something out of nothing, content wise lol. Think it's fair to assume a DDV practice is quite a bit more intense than a CMW one. So glad to have a CBB lifer leading the program.

An Xavier Johnson that was a better decision maker, both on and off the court, would be a pretty good player.
