Our talent might not have been that great. I think we had talent, some hurt and some young. When you have that you get inconsistency but (!) to go 1-12 during that stretch is more than just talent. It’s coaching, it’s chemistry, it’s culture, it’s pride, it’s effort, it’s confidence and we lacked a whole lot of that more than we lacked talent. You don’t beat the brakes off Marquette (playing well at the time), beat MSU x2, Wiscy, etc. if you don’t have some talent. Where was the player leadership that said “this isn’t how I’m going out?!” We didn’t have it. We had a bunch of players just going with the flow. When things were going well they were excited and into the game. When things weren’t going well it was about individuals. Give me a Yogi and Bryant screaming at each other. Give me a Hulls that’s kicking a ball after defeat. We need DAWGS that hate losing. That’s when the CULTURE will return to the glory days. That’s when we go into games knowing we’re going to win. We have players putting up shots hoping they’ll go in, not expecting it. We have players that aren’t too upset when they miss a rotation or don’t close out to contest a shot. Give me players that are pissed when a teammate is dogging it or doesn’t hit a shot because they haven’t been in the gym grinding it. Give me players that live basketball. It doesn’t make it right or OK, but we were some BS HORSE shots from being like 21-11 and having a relatively happy fanbase, or some entitlement issues away from maybe even being about 24-8 and possibly still playing. (If if’s and but’s blah blah, I know) For all of our on-court flaws, there was some flukey shizz that tanked this season as much as anything in my opinion. DISCLAIMER: I have no idea if my math is right, I just started typing.

A few thoughts, some of which have already been stated by others: - There are many things I like about Archie. His emphasis on defense. His emphasis on recruiting the state. I like how he doesn't speak in platitudes like his successor. He has the "look" of a basketball coach... for whatever that matters. That being said... he's 35-31 with no NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure. That includes embarrassing blowout losses at home to Indiana State and Fort Wayne and losing 12 of 13 games. That's not going to cut it, long term. Similar numbers ended the Davis and Crean eras. I don't want Archie fired, I want him to turn this thing around. Plus, I have little confidence in our administration to find someone better. - Normally, I am a fan of building up a roster and limiting attrition. I think that's Archie's style. However, I am not sure that several players are good "fits" for what Archie is trying to build here. Is it a lack of effort? Are they too okay with losing? I'm not sure... although one of my lasting memories for the season will be watching multiple players laughing and smiling on TV while coming from the locker room after halftime vs. Ohio State in Big Ten Tournament after being out-played in the first half of what was their most important game of the year. I'm not saying their lives should be a living nightmare, but I know I wasn't smiling at that moment. - Who steps up this off-season? The past two off-seasons we were greeted with rave reviews of the improvements of two players in particular. They had many opportunities to step up this season, but could not attain that consistency we so desperately needed. I haven't given up on those players, but I think it would be somewhat foolish to count on them as leaders for next season. However, someone needs to step up with the departures of Morgan and (likely) Langford. Is the leader on the roster right now? Many people point to Phinisee (and I love the guy) but look at these numbers below... - Here are our shooting numbers for our returning backcourt... Phinisee 36.1% FG, 31.0% 3FG, 66.0% FT... Durham 40.3% FG, 34.8% 3FG, 74.0% FT... Green 40.2% FG, 41.0 3FG, 73.6 FT. That won't win many games. I fully expect improvement from all of them next year, but we need some capable shooters in the worst way possible. None of those guys provided us with a consistent shooting threat this season. - Our post game has potential. Davis can provide offense. However, he has never played more than 18.8 minutes per game in his career. It may be wishful thinking to expect anything more than 20-22 minutes per game (if that.) This is not to mention his lack of rebounding that will need to be improved upon. He'll have help with Trayce Jackson-Davis, but I don't see them playing on the floor together much. I have failed to see either be able to hit a jump shot with any sort of regularity and we'll need to space the floor. - What will come of our highly-touted 2018 class? Langford is likely gone. Hunter never played and considering how cautious IU seems to be with their athletic health guidelines, I have concerns about his athletic future at IU. Anderson failed to score a point in the 2019 calendar year. Forrester logged 56 minutes. Thompson played 63 minutes. That means Phinisee will be the only returner from that class with any sort of real experience to draw upon. Need a lot more production from this group. Remember, they are all "Archie's Guys". Hopefully a year in the program helps them improve. - Hopefully Archie can find a couple more players this off-season who will help us win games. Whether that's Watford, grad transfers, I don't know. I do know that the current roster projection for next year screams a 9th-10th place finish in the conference, at-best. Again, that won't cut it. Just my opinion.

I’m sick and tired of hearing about this coach and that coach. You don’t win games unless you’re mentally and physically tough. It doesn’t matter your position. We have a bunch of kids that want to be coddled because they didn’t get to play the position they wanted or the coach didn’t get them enough shots. The ******* kids need to prove themselves. If they don’t want to prove themselves they can go join the e-sports league so they can play whatever damn position they want. It’s not a democracy it’s an autocracy. We have kids all smiles and giggles that it’s over. What does that say about you and your competitive spirit?! It’s a damn shame they get the privilege to wear that uniform and use that practice facility when their only concern is themselves. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

I listened to the first hour and He has some things just flat out wrong. No one at IU has said he can't take kids out on the court to shoot. If you want to shoot at Assembly hall just go there in the summer and you can shoot around for a few minutes. I shot around at games for years in the 80's and early 90's. I would wait till after the game go down to the floor, wait 10 minutes and then start shooting around with a ball I brought. No one ever said anything to me. He talks about not getting an interview for the job after Sampson he leaves out one key part. He was told when he was the interim coach to not do anything with any players after the season was over, the next day he kicked several players off. I can go on and on about him but I won't.

It begins and ends with CULTURE. O$U doesn’t have to go through a rebuild because their culture was there before Holtmann. Ditto for UL and other programs. Why, at the end of the season, do we question their heart and effort?! Culture!!! There are so many cliches for this stuff. Hard work beats talent when talent refuses to work hard. (Or adapt and take on a new role) Johnny Dawkins had a locker room full of players filling buckets with tears because THEY FREAKING CARED! We have players that aren’t upset because now they can put it on cruise control. Archie didn’t forget how to coach. He took teams with lesser talent further. If you couldn’t see how pissed he was throughout the year you were drinking at Nips level. I couldn’t care less about star rating over the next 2-3 years. Give me a Race Thompson or Aljahmi Durham that’s going to work. Give me Joey Brunk that can help with locker room issues. Far too often, we had one or two players trying to lift the half ton rock by themselves while the rest of the team wasn’t interested. We need a full team pushing in the right direction. You could see through body language, effort, and interactions who gave a damn and who didn’t. Those kids that don’t need to move along to a better fit. This program won’t get anywhere near its potential until hard work and effort in EVERYTHING they do is the baseline. This program is better than letting kids run the damn thing. Your first paragraph is definitely fair. They played better than I would’ve ever thought, BUT there are people actually saying we played better without him. I don’t know why or where that logic comes from (I actually do, some IU fans get upset about one and dones), but I don’t think it’s even close to being true. We will miss Romeo, or at least I know I will.
  14. 3 points
That wasn't the question. Seems like every little crybaby over Romeo had to latch on to "we are playing better without him". That wasn't the case. I'm all in, all the time, for Indiana Basketball. I went to all 3 nit games. I appreciate that they didnt mail it in game one, but nothing about the play was "better without Romeo".

Yeah, I mean Smith could get in the gym and get shots up and work on his ball handling skills. There are plenty of team managers who are with the program to rebound for players at all hours of the day. I’d hope if Smith wanted to be a wing he’d be busting his @$$ to prove that he was worthy of getting minutes there. I know nothing was ever given to me and when someone said I couldn’t that was just all the more ammo for me to prove them wrong. I guess he could just vent to the media about how he was wronged though. Give me the kid that’s willing to prove it over talking about it. We need DAWGS. If Clifton transfers - it is hard to blame him. He needs to go somewhere he can get minutes to fulfill his potential. No inside information but I put the chances of him transferring over 80%. Romeo will go pro - so we have two spots.I hope Forrester and Race stay.
