The only guys that Romeo will pay attention to are Morgan, Davis, Smith, Green, Durham. Those guys are far from the problem.

Romeo did about everything last night but sweep the floor after the game.

NEW ALBANY — Romeo Langford was honored prior to Saturday night’s home opener against Evansville Harrison for a pair of recent records he set.

The New Albany star then went out and nearly got another one.

Langford scored 47 points — one shy of the career-high and school-record 48 he scored in the season-opener against Charlestown — to lead the Bulldogs to a 96-59 win over the Warriors at a packed Doghouse. Included in the crowd were coaches from Vanderbilt, one of Langford’s final three college choices.

Langford likely left a good impression on Bryce Drew & Company. After receiving the game ball from New Albany’s season-opening win at Charlestown, when he also became the program’s all-time leading rebounder, the 6-foot-6 senior guard scored nine points in the first period, 10 in the second, 16 in the third and 12 in the fourth.

“I felt like I played good and the team played well too and that’s all that really matters,” said Langford, who was 16 for 24 from the field and 11 of 13 from the free throw line for No. 1-ranked New Albany, which improved to 3-0 with the victory.

The Dogs ran out to a 7-3 lead before the Warriors reeled off nine points in a row. Harrison held a 15-10 lead until New Albany finished the first quarter with a 9-0 run. It began with a 3-pointer by reserve guard Darin Starks, then was followed by a Langford putback and a pair of Sean East layups.

Starks, a 5-9 sophomore, continued to spark the Dogs in the second quarter after forwards Trey Hourigan and Julien Hunter got in early foul trouble. He scored the first four points during New Albany’s 8-0 run early in the period, then capped it with one of the plays of the game — intercepting a pass in mid-air in the frontcourt, then throwing the ball into the backcourt, where Derrick Stevenson ran it down and laid it in.

“I just contributed as best I could,” said Starks, who finished with 13 points on 5 of 8 shooting off the bench. “The role players stepped up. We all know [Romeo] and Sean are going to get theirs. It’s all about the other people on the team that are going to contribute and make this team great.”

Langford took over in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors (2-1) by himself, 16-15.

“We really got going when [Langford] got going,” Shannon said. “We had a lull there where he didn’t get many touches and I thought we were a little stale. When he got uncorked, it really opened it up for everybody else.”

Langford also got his 3-point shot going. After shooting 3 for 17 from long range in the Dogs’ first two games, Langford was 4 of 9 from downtown against the Warriors.

“My 3-pointers [had] been off the first couple games,” said Langford, who also finished with 12 rebounds, six assists and four steals. “I felt like this week at practice my shot’s been [falling] real well. I finally got to play at home, and get my rims so I can get my shot back, and now it feels better.”

Added Shannon: “I just told him in [the locker room], he’s got his 3 going now, so he’ll have plenty of opportunities to break his own scoring record.”

Langford’s point total gives him 2,198 for his career, which ties him with Tri-Central’s Grayson Flittner for 18th all-time in state history.

“I felt like today was a good team win,” he said. “We started off kind of slow. We really didn’t have the pace picked up in the first quarter when they were hanging with us. Then once, we started putting pressure on defense and made it an up-and-down game, that’s when we broke it apart.”

East finished with 19 points, five assists and four steals for the Bulldogs, who play at Floyd Central in a key Hoosier Hills Conference on Friday.

Senior guard Ja’Korion Lindsey led Harrison with 23 points on the strength of 4 of 5 shooting.
