MADISON, Wis. — It wasn’t the usual postgame handshake line.

No, this one was a bit more tense.

Moments after his game-high 31 points helped Wisconsin send Indiana to its 14th consecutive loss in Madison, Nigel Hayes made sure the Hoosiers remembered the man at the heart of their latest loss at the Kohl Center. 

“Nobody on your team can guard me,” Hayes said as he walked through the line at center court.

Cameras in front of the scorers table caught the moment, and afterward, Hayes intimated that his words were pointed toward IU strength and conditioning coach Lyonel Anderson.

“It was (said to) a member of their staff,” Hayes told reporters after the Badgers’ 82-79 overtime win. “There was some playful, competitive banter between myself and that individual. It occurred throughout the whole game. There’s nothing wrong with that. We can call him the ‘Madison Spike Lee.’ Usually, when Spike Lee talks, bad things happen for his team.”

Anderson has brought an excitable presence to the IU bench during his first season on the staff. Whatever the cause, Hayes had reason to talk on Tuesday night. He was a matchup problem from the outset, teaming with forward Ethan Happ to cause trouble underneath the basket. Hayes found his way to the free throw line with ease and made the most of the opportunities, shooting 17-for-22.

He had four more free-throw attempts than IU’s entire team, which went 16-for-18 at the line. At various points, Collin Hartman, OG Anunoby, Troy Williams, Juwan Morgan and Max Bielfeldt were among the Hoosiers assigned to Hayes.

“I will try to say this as humbly and respectfully as possible,” Hayes said. “I’ve got a mindset where I feel like I’m the best player on the court and no one can guard me.”

I think Yogi should have kicked when he drove. They were collapsing on him hard when he drove. IMO someone should have got into the lane. I said that last night before the play. But everyone knew Yogi was taking that shot.

Of course I was watching, I'm an IU fan, but I wasn't watching them from some sports bar on the sandy beaches of Fantasy Island. I was watching the product on the floor, and it doesn't take Bob Knight to point out how deficient this team is. Now go have a drink and relax.

They would have HAD to call it if Yogi draws contact, IMO. It's not like he had to jump into him. Going straight up would have caused contact. Hard to fault Yogi though, it was a split second decision. He is SO due to hit some of those. He hits the comeback close shot with no hesitation and seems to miss all the winners. Heckuva game though.

Sorry if it offends anyone I just think it is a cop out to blame the refs. IU had plenty of opportunities to win the game in the second half and couldn't hang on to the ball or play any sort of defense on Happ. Questionable substitutions late in the game and in OT. IU had their opportunities and didn't capitalize.

I felt like going into Kohl against a mediocre Wisky team would be a nice quiz to see where we are at. Unfortunately we failed and we have a lot tougher tests upcoming.

if yogi would of hit that shot would we have passed the quiz? Crazy to think if yogi hits that shot people would probably forget how bad we played and take a road win like melo and Maryland did but missing it and the team fails a quiz. I have seen other people call Wisconsin mediocre on here so I didn't quote you bailey to call you out just wanted to dig deeper into Wisconsin season.
If people are comparing wisky's team to the last 2 seasons then of course they look mediocre. Wisky went on a historic 2 year run for their program. They lost 4 key players from those teams. They were 11-9 going into our game, would 13-7 of looked better? I think at the beginning of the year Hayes was figuring out how to play as the number 1 option instead of the 3 or 4 option on those stacked teams. I'm a believer that teams can and do get better as the year goes on ( if you only watch iu you might not be used to this). Can a team that was mediocre at the beginning of the year and played the 6th hardest schedule get better? They are 1-2 against rpi top 25, 2-2 agaisnt rpi 26-50, and 3-1 agaisnt rpi 51-100. if u have a 6th strength of schedule you better win all your easy games at home and they didn't and dug themselves a hole to make the tournament. I guess my point is the margin of error is small in basketball, 11-9 could of easily been 13-7 or 14-6. Sorry for the rant I just think they were a better team then some want to admit

I liked:

         1)  The way our guys fought and clawed their way back at the end of the first half.

         2)  The way we knocked down free throws on the road.  Especially Bryant.

         3)  These players and coaches putting themselves in a position to win at Wisconsin.

         4)  Select posters that are really looking at this loss objectively.  I realize that if for some reason things were to completely go south, there will indeed be high volume he77 raising; however, I've been pleasantly surprised by the support of the changes that have taken place.

 

If rules permit,  I would like CTC take these guy to a wide range of gyms through out the state & have the players shoot with difficult lighting conditions in each of the places they practice.  With the exceptions of Yogi last night & Nick Z in Minny I'm not certain we've really had anyone to really light it up from deep.  I'm not complaining here. Nor am I in any kind of panic mode.  The cooler outside shooting percentages on the road is something that has been on my mind a bit since Maui.  Does anyone have recommendations on what this team may try to stay hot when they have a variety of backgrounds to look at when playing on the road?

unless you are one of the top 8 teams road wins are going to be a battle. Even those teams struggle. Kansas got blasted by Oklahoma state the other night, Oklahoma state then followed that up by getting smacked around be Kansas st. I was just glad that iu showed little fight and didn't fold in the 2nd half like they did at Duke. On top of all the stupid turnovers and not being able to guard Hayes without fouling this team found a way to have a chance to win with the ball in yogi's hand.

some players are just not ready for the moment or bright lights that come on the road. That's not limited to iu players. There are kids that in warmups and practice light it up and can't miss but then get in a game and can't hit anything. Being able to do it on the road is what separates the good ones from th great ones. There might of been a reason why zeiloft was at Illinois st. To give an example of a high rates player, luke kennard from Duke was known as the best shooter coming out of high school last year but early on and even today he isn't shooting lights out like many expected ( except for that 31 pt night) That's not to say he won't as he gets older just not ready for the bright lights just yet

I agree. It was good to have a chance to win but there is enough talent and experience on this team to do great things. You will have some struggles on the way to great things but you need to have more upward momentum than downward. So the loss to Wisconsin is not a big deal if replaced by victories in the other big games
