Indiana v. Northwestern POSTGAME Thread

Recommended Posts

I don't know what happened, and I sure don't want to make the statement that Indiana is a better team without Blackmon, but if something else other than his getting hurt happened which led to the team playing this efficiently and this well on the defensive end, I'd love to hear other opinions.

They're playing now as well as any Crean team has at Indiana, and it's a lot of fun to see.  The schedule gets a little tougher, but this is a team taking better care of the ball, taking higher quality shots, sharing the ball from all spots, rebounding well, and guarding really well on the defensive end.

Pretty hard to find anything other than "keep it up."

Yes.

Also... this year's Yogi Ferrell = Defender. Distributer. LEADER

What say you?

Sick of the weak schedule talk. Yeah the teams we've been playing are on the lower half of the Big Ten rankings but they've played some good teams close and even beaten some. Plus it's not like we're barely beating these teams. We're blowing all of them out.

Yep. We didn't look this good blowing out Morehead and Savannah St., and any of these lower division B1G teams are better than them.

As my nine year old (who breathes the game) said to me "James Blackmon can't be that bad!" I think, on a few different levels, that sums it up for me.

We are impressed.

There WILL be adversity at some point soon. Can't wait to see how this team handles it. If they do that well, the sky is the limit.

Not to be too negative but Troy is also a bad defender.  You have both of those guys on the floor at the same time it becomes a difficult to cover for them.  I've gone back and watched several of the B1G games and Troy sticks out now more than ever on the defensive end.  He has so much potential on defense but he has no clue about positioning or team defense.

We've been much better on defense in the B1G but if Troy comes along we have another level or two we can take on that end when Troy gets it together.

Lower tier teams because we put them there. If MSU gets beat by Maryland tonight, they will have the same record as Northwestern. The college season has been crazy. Teams get hot and cool down for various reasons. The Hoosiers look ready to take on anybody. Hope they stay hot.

At some point we have to get cold right? Regress for a little week or two right?

Could we perhaps get those week over with before the dance....? :ninja:

I'll argue that we aren't playing our best bball yet. Just to play devils advocate. Troy's defense can improve as well as his decision making abilities on the break. Our offense can still get stagnant in stretches as Fisch talked about in the pregame show.

IU's play has been particularly outstanding the past couple of week and perhaps not coincidentally we haven't heard a peep from BtownBanner's own big man, Terry Hutchens, during this time. Has Hutch moved past commentary on the Hoosiers' play and taken a hands-on role in transforming this team?

just a revenge thing from last year. Who'd they lose since last year?

I don't think anyone of significance. Van Fleet and Baker were the big 2. I want UK, so people can see how overrated Skal was coming out of high school. Kind of want LSU too, just cause I want to watch Simmons

I think JBJ being out is correlated but not causative. His being out might explain a slight improvement in defense, but he wasn't causing the rest of the team not to buy-in, he wasn't causing the poor defense we saw when he was on the bench. Something clicked behind the scenes and it is a night and day difference. If anything, JBJ being out pushed it along because it became a need. Until then, we could rest on being one of the best offensive teams in the country. We lose a huge chunk of production and the guys start thinking they may need some more defense to keep the other team from exploiting the weaker offense and then it just starts rolling.

I haven't seen the whole team play defense like this in a long long time and if we can keep it up then I'm encouraged for the team's future. The underclassmen who are seeing how effective this defense is will help pass it along to the next group and the next.

I agree. People need to stop saying that Indiana is playing better D because JBJ is out. Everyone is stepping up their D, especially Yogi. I was hard on him earlier this year because guys were getting by him too easily causing switching and help d which led to too many easy shots. He's really shored up his defense. The only thing you can really state causative by JBJ being out is that OG and Juwon are getting more playing time. Those freshman really do a good job on defense. Both can also guard multiple positions.

I agree, you put a team in front of us, we beat them by 20. Maryland, who just played the same team we did, at home, like us, won in Overtime. We won by 32 I believe.
