Student attendance

Recommended Posts

As a student I had some balcony seats during some of our nonconfrence games and I kid you not. Me and my friend were the only two up there in section AA. I think part of this is because of the slow start we had. And because of a lack of interest. Some kids on my floor on mcnutt got purdue maryland and iowa and want to sell them because they really didn't care. I've found that most people here really don't care about basketball as much as I thought they would...

Yeah same here, honestly during our 1 balcony game attendance was so bad everywhere they moved us down behind the basket.

Yeah we got that for Alcorn State. I'm most confused why the behind the basket seats aren't being filled. They were barely half full last night while the bottom GA was packed.

It was sad to see those empty seats when the sideline reporter spoke about the angle of the balcony. I was embarrassed to see that. Are those student GA seats?

Yep. That entire balcony is GA student seating.

Then why are they buying them? That's $200+. If there was a lack of interest we wouldn't be selling 11,000+ tickets for a 7,800 seat allotment.

We used to get 4 games and 4 games only. Place never had an empty seat. When you're mediocre, you have problems like this. Sad to me, because it used to be a rarity to get a main level seat for an IU Basketball game. You got one main level, one endzone, and two balcony seats, and that was it. In the late 1980's and early 1990's.

"It was cold" is not an excuse.

OK, this is a tad exaggerated. They still oversell the student section. We sold 11,000+ tickets for a 7,800 seat allotment. We're 16-3 (6-0). That is not mediocre. As I said earlier, Bama football and UK hoops have had these issues too. This isn't a Crean thing, it's just frustrating to see and makes me think we may need to limit student tix a bit since they have so many other options now.

And as far as "never an empty seat", that's just patently false:[attachment=3261:ImageUploadedByBtownBanners1453348145.549295.jpg]

Because students, themselves, don't even pay for them. It's one click when they are signing up for classes. They are put on their account and their parents/loans pay for them.

Like somebody said earlier, it's a social event to some people. I've seen girls come in, take a year's worth of selfies together and leave at the under-16 timeout in the first half.

FFS..."It's cold here"..."it's a long walk in the cold"? Sorry...but those are not valid excuses.

I saw the empty balcony last night started yelling at the TV and the Hoosiers were up like 20+. When I was in school, I only got 6 tickets per season and only 4 were Big 10 season...you can bet that not even the threat of ebola would have kept me away from the Assembly Hall on game day. I was jacked just to be in the building. I remember sitting in the last row of the balcony for a non-conference game and loving every single second of it.

As a out of state alum (from Indiana), it is sad and very disappointing. You know what to do to combat the cold? Go get some wings and some beers and it will warm you right up. I did it many many times and I didn't freeze and am here to tell you about it.

Makes me sick!

Like others have mentioned, IUBB doesn't have that spark anymore around the campus to my knowledge. Yes there are major basketball fans, but for the most part, it's nothing compared to when Cody. Vic. Hulls were here.

And yeah, cold weather. It's a long walk and people don't want to do it. This is a younger crowd we are talking about.

I live about a half hour walk from Assembly (Spruce Hall, it's a newer dorm). I found a way to buy tickets off of others and use my ticket package so that I got tickets to every home game this year. I will for sure be going to every single game, balcony or not, rain or sleet or snow or shine. I've dreamed of being able to go to Assembly as a student since I was a little kid. It is sad that my fellow students don't feel the same way, however. In fact, I sat behind the basket last game and was psyched that I could sit so close to the action. Yet somehow, I was the only one in my row. I couldn't believe it.

AH yes behind the basket are incredible tickets. I have had the privilege of being behind the basket my freshman year for the Wat Shot and the next year against Michigan on Dipo's almost dunk that broke the Internet. I've got them for Maryland this year but I don't think I will be able to go because I will be on spring break.

Back in my day, Spruce Hall was dirt and construction.

Was speaking of Big Ten games, and it's not patently false.  The chart you showed included the Indiana Classic and all of the other games when students weren't on campus, etc.  The student ticket package then was Big Ten games only.   I wasn't speaking of the overall attendance which included some of the same BS games we get today.  I was around when students could sell their tickets to scalpers, and the scalpers used to make up fake student ID's so people could use them...and sold student tickets for double the face value.

Go back and read Season on The Brink. Even then Feinstein talks about Assembly Hall not being full and fans booing (which people also seem to believe never happened), but continue to romanticize the past by all means.

OK, maybe I'm misunderstanding here, but you know ahead of time that it's GA right? If you don't get there early, the best seats will be filled. That's how it works. Leaving the balcony empty is begging to have the section reduced, especially when there is a wait list. Every school has some court side seats saved for donors. Duke and MSU are no exception. It's about $$$. Also, those schools only give students about a third of the seats we give to our students, so you may not even get a ticket there. If I were in charge, I would put students behind the benches on court level and leave the other side for donors. But, I'm not.

Man I would have KILLED for GA seating when I was a student. Absolutely killed for it. Would've had so much better seats. I agree it looks bad on tv when the section is so empty. Would have to cut student tickets down to allow more room for wait listed members. Problem is the balcony won't have many takers regardless.

I'll never understand this generation. You got to school at IU but don't want to attend games? Cut the student section in half and sell those tickets to the average fan.

I'll never understand the previous generations. You think that attending college games should be a top priority among college students? If it's not filling up on a regular basis then I agree, cut the student section to about 6000 and sell the rest. But acting like anyone who goes to IU should be honored to attend a college basketball game is silly. At peak interest, only about 25-30% of the student body purchases season tickets. Of those who buy, maybe half at best genuinely care about the team and know who the majority of the players are.

This.  Although, I am a huge IU basketball junkie, if they had GA seats when I was there, I would have rather sat in the balcony than in the dorm or my apartment to watch the game.  I would not have cared who they were playing or what players were on IU's team.

Glad to say that when I was in school IU ranked #1 in Big 10 attendance all 4 years.  If the students don't use them, they are going to lose them to fans that will pay to go.

Apathy is starting to set in with the program. I just don't remember this and that was just 6 years ago

I believe there is an easier solution:

Issue the full 11,000 tickets to students as they are currently doing, but remove the student designation from those tickets.

That allows the full complement of students to attend if they want to, and also allows the free market to re-distribute those tickets via StubHub for students who aren't going to attend.
