IU vs Austin Peay Post Game Thread

Recommended Posts

It's not about winning and losing when you play Austin Peay.   It's about how the way they play translates against good teams and against Big Ten teams.   This is Indiana.  We expect to beat cupcakes by 30.   If we play the way we did tonight on Thursday, the game will be close and we could lose it.  Same against Duke, Notre Dame, and 9 of the 13 Big Ten teams we play.

Every time we have a post-game discussion after a win, someone posts "dang, you'd think we lost."   It's not about that.   Indiana is fun but imperfect, and still has gaping holes defensively and in decision making.  Yes, they're very good.  Yes, they can score against bad teams.  Yes, they've got a high ceiling.  And they also have to get much better; which is fun to talk about and why chat boards exist.

With the amount of upsets so far this year, Im happy with a 30 point win. There will obviously always be something to improve upon. No team ever plays a perfect game.

I'm most excited for Maui not just because it's legit competition but it's an opportunity to see how they play back-to-back games. Being able to play one afternoon, then the next, then the next is totally different than anything else they'll encounter up until it's Big Ten Tourney time. If nothing else, I want them to learn how to carry the energy and excitement of a win 20 hours into the future for the next game and so on.

I am just excited about the potential to watch IUBB three days in a row next week :D

Not to excuse it too much, but it was 60% on 10 free throws. Our 4 missed were: 1 from Yogi, 1 from Troy, 1 from Juwan, and 1 from Niego.

I'm more concerned about what that stat says about our ability to get to the line. We were one of the worst teams in the country last year to get to the stripe, we really need to improve there if we want to win close games. The points you score when the clock isn't moving are difference makers.

Good point on the misses... but it's still 4 points left on the table. And I agree, IU needs to find a way to get to the FT line more often. Free points are free points.

Knight always used to say your opponent was not the other team, but he game itself.

If you learn the game, and play the game, the results will take care of themselves. Fundamentals are key. So is effort. The "perfect" game of basketball is yet to be played.

We are in the same spot we were in last year with more potential. At some point I want to fix our turnover and poor defense problem. That is what our main trouble spots were last year and is inexcusable to bring it back the next season. I am one who didn't like the game and wasn't what I wanted to see. The shooting was great but I can't handle turning the ball over 20 times. I know it is early and am optimistic they can correct the issues and get better. I am also prepared for them not to fix the problems like last year and just cuss and throw things when they turn the ball over and let guys drive in for easy layups and pray we can out shoot everyone and cheer on every spectacular dunk

I'm most curious to see how they play outside of Assembly Hall, just being on a neutral court will be good experience.

Great point too. This Maui tourney has a ton to offer in terms of preppin' these guys for the real deal in a few months.

And is sweet for the people who want some good basketball too! Awesome scheduling decision.

I was most encouraged by the fact that Troy didn't try his drives to nowhere a dozen times like he did in the opener. Also encouraged to see 3's falling...after the first three games I thought we might be on a pace to take a step backward on that part of our game. Much like Bird was with the Celtics, Bielfeld can be a "play-through" kind of guy if Crean wants to do that (not comparing the two in ability but in the understanding of the game).

All in all, I feel this was a step up. We wore down another team by constant substitution, and if you're going to have the "play fast" mentality, that's one key in the execution of the game.

One side story I have to tell: many years ago when I was a sports writer in Bloomington, I covered a preliminary round of the NCAA in Terre Haute, and Austin Peay was one of the teams that made the field. They had a star player named Fly Williams. The chants from their crowd included, "Let's go Peay" (all at the same time?) and "The Fly is open, now let's go Peay."

Notre Dame mangled Austin Peay in that game, by the way.

Gotta love people criticizing the offense after a 66% shooting performance and breaking the century mark...

They turned the ball over 20 times against Austin Peay....... are you guys being serious? I know some of you want to hear nothing but praise for the team, but there was definitely fault to find in how they played
