I saw we just give Grant a shot till he actually comes here and plays. Last offseason I heard the same thing about Beilfeldt, OG, and Juwan. Two years ago it was the same news about Zeisloft. People were saying they were a waste of a scholarship and that they weren't going to help. 

I mean, the comparison isn't really applicable to those guys. Max was on a Big Ten team already, most were glad to get him here with our lack of depth inside before his commitment. OG had tons of athleticism, and potential, so people were excited about him. Morgan was a low 4-star or high 3-star depending on what recruiting source you go with. Every recruit we has their detractors, for whatever reason (they're just going to end up leaving early, they're not from Indiana, etc), but for the most part they are supported. 

 

I hope I'm wrong, but man, I just can't really see Gelon contributing much until maybe the end of his junior year here. The only guy you listed who is an applicable comparison would be Z, but most of the complaints people had about Z are pretty spot on, all he is is a shooter. He has definitely shot the ball better than we really expected, and has been an upper classmen leader, but otherwise he isn't bringing a ton which people were afraid of. Gelon doesn't seem to do much of anything at a Major 5 conference level even average right now besides shoot the ball. And even then it looks like right now he is going to be completely reliant upon everyone else to get him open shots. Having a player that needs exceptional talent around him just to be serviceable in conference is a big concern, and is a valid concern.

Not every kid that we get is going to be a superstar from day one.  I remember watching IU back in the Knight days and most guys didn't even get a whiff of the court until they were juniors...when they were actually ready to play.

Never said there was an issue with that. Chances are OG and Morgan are going to be 3-4 year players. But again there is a huge difference because OG already contributes and Morgan has moments. It doesn't even look like Gelon is going to see the court outside of garbage minutes as a freshman and potentially sophomore. I could realistically even see him not being able to see the court much as a junior. Spending a scholarship on a guy who might not even play until his fourth year isn't enjoyable

Paraphrasing your quote here to ask a specific, slightly off topic, question. This may fit better on the creaning thread, I'm happy to move if so.

 

In today's CBB world where transfers are so common, both for players wanting more playing time and because coaches "force kids out" to make room, is it possible that some coaches fill an extra scholarship position as a "placeholder" or sorts? Someone who they know is expendable that they could either keep for four years but also isn't so valuable that they put them there just so they can force them out the next year for a 4 or 5 star? I could see it being a backhanded sort of strategy, the coach can use it to show a new recruit how badly they want them to commit: "Look, I'm willing to force this player out for YOU." It could also backfire (coach isn't dedicated to his players, revolving door, etc.) but to a one-and-done 5 star does that matter as much? I'm not at all saying GG is one of these (if this is even a thing), but given all of the creaning talk over the past few years and the players we've picked up who can't/don't/won't contribute, it struck me as a possibility.

The kid may be better than Gelon. That isn't the point. Why does it need to be second guessed to the nth degree? What's the point? Sasha is a junior. Grant is 2016. Crean got his mad scientist vibes tingling on this one. Low risk move anyway. There are much bigger things to worry about than which Crown Point youngster IU signed
