I'm worried about in-state recruiting.

Based on what you/we know, are we satisfied with the recruiting options/focus for 16 and 17? I don't claim to know every recruit we are after but it doesn't seem like we are going to replace Yogi with another 5 star stud. That seems to be my biggest concern

Just playing devil's advocate because I know you two don't agree, love to beat dead horses, I like the debate because there's no definitive answer right or wrong, I'll take the other side just for the sport of it, and I like Yogi,  but.......He  has.  That's a fact.  

 

He's also a career 42% shooter who's taken more shots on his team than anyone else combined over his 3 year run.  He also averages an assist about every 8 minutes while having the ball in his hands the lion's share of the time.  In the half court, that number goes up to about one every15 minutes.  Kind of..very vanilla.  He's the best we have, and I'm sure he'll lead a better team this season; but facts are facts.  He has taken on a role, asked of him or not, as primary scorer AND ball handler; and his teams haven't done well.  Not saying it's all his fault or that he's a bad player or that I don't like him.   But...that doesn't change the team's 37-29 overall or his 16-18 Big Ten record.    It's more of an indictment of Crean for not either using him the right way or giving him enough to work with; but as beloved as he is, so far, his results are very ordinary by "stud at Indiana" standards.   How many "studs" at IU can you name who have been catalysts on teams with the record he has?

 

Edit :  Again, just playing yin to yang and taking the other side of this argument.   Yogi has a year left, so it could all change, but in recent memory, say the last 40 years, the "stud" and legendary point guards at IU are :

 

Quinn Buckner - had a 63-1 record his last two seasons, and led an undefeated national champ while earning first team all America honors.

 

Isiah Thomas - Don't need to make this comparison, do I?

 

Steve Alford - arguably the best shooter Indiana ever had and one of the best in college basketball history.  More of a combo guard, but handled the ball most of the time.   Big Ten POY, first team all American, and Olympic gold medalist.  Also won a national title.

 

Honerable mention to Michael Lewis, Chris Reynolds, and AJ Guyton.  

 

Tough to categorize.  Can make an argument either way :  Tom Coverdale.

 

All beloved Hoosiers, all receiving some conference honor, none "studs" by IU's standards.   Yogi's in that honorable mention category right now.  Beloved and talented, but hasn't really done anything yet.   In fact, that's why he said he was staying at Indiana...to leave a legacy.   He hasn't done that yet, and he knows it.

A)Thinking that Rojo is a starting floor general by his junior year (I have my doubts that he's a primary ball handler)

 

B)Feeling pretty confident that Tony Carr or Devonte Green is the pg answer and that we're getting one of them

Time will tell.   I will never understand Tom Crean's recruiting, and I sure as hell will never pretend to be able to predict it.   Whoever we get, you can bet the IU faithful will tell us how great he is and how much better he is than anyone we didn't get as soon as he commits.

Not "everyone," but there is a large crowd who will.  Believe me, I saw them when we signed Mike White, Bawa Muniru, Peter Jurkin, etc.   I heard from them when we signed Jeremy Hollowell and I said he was lazy and would not be a good fit.   They're out there.

fair argument either way. He has been our most talented player the past few years and the primary ball handler and leader but we have sucked. Is he the only reason we haven't been in the cellar or the reason we have not been great... Not sure

I've given Crean credit multiple times on this board, when I felt it was deserved. I'm just not hesitant to criticize him when it's deserved either.

Yes, Calipari is a better coach. He was more successful before he got to UK than Crean has been in his entire career including IU. Head to head matchups aren't a good barometer of coaching ability; Mike Davis beat Izzo, Patino and K in the same year.

Calipari is also the dirtiest coach in college basketball. He has put two schools on probation and should a third if the NCAA ever grows a pair.

I never said he wasn't, and I've said because of the sleaze factor I don't want him as coach.  All I said was that Cal is a good coach and a better coach than Crean, and if you look it up it's undeniable.

 

Cal had 10 conference titles and 11 top 3 conference finishes and made at least the Sweet 16 5 times, without his vacated seasons.  He finished in the top 3 more than 3 times as often as he finished 6th or lower (11 vs 3).  Before he ever got to UK.  Compared to Crean who has 2 conference titles and has finished outside the top 5 just as often as he's finished in the top 5 with 3 trips to at least the Sweet 16...in his entire career.  Cal is the better coach, and it's not particularly close.

You can win it all every year, if you are dirty you are dirty and I want no part of that. I couldn't care less about records if you are obtaining them by dirty means. I'm not wanting to fight, hey I'm just an IU fan who just wishes the best for my team.

But if you're cheating to do it, you've gotta take the record with a grain of salt.

I guess it's all speculation at this point. It's impossible to get in the mind of Wilkes or Scruggs.

I've said this before, but for whatever reason, the top in-state players all seem to feel no love with Indiana over the last decade. I went back to 2007, when IU landed Gordon, which really was kind of a weird win. But since then, Indiana has missed out a ton of top in-state players year after year. That's not to say guys like Hulls, Yogi, and Zeller weren't big wins, but when you look at the other guys going to Purdue, Michigan State, Xavier, etc from Indiana's own back yard, it's so frustrating. Names like Deshaun Thomas, Gary Harris, Glen Robinson, Zak Irvin, Trey Lyles, Blueitt, Swanigan, Hummel, Teague, etc. And 2016 is no different. IU settled for Grant Galeon, who might fill a need, but man I would have rather had Guy who does everything Galeon does, only much better. But instead he's taking his talents to Virginia???

I get that Crean likes these Boo Williams guys, and does a pretty good job of recruiting DMV, but you NEED to be all-in when you have a player like Guy or Langford in your own back yard. Crean needs someone who can recruit the mid-west and in particular, the state of Indiana, and do a much better job IMO because it doesn't seem like he has a grip on it.

I think you're generally right, but the 2017 class so far, in my opinion, could be the one that sort of changes that momentum. 

Coming off a sweet 16, IUBB has a lot of momentum. Taking advantage of that by laying a foundation in Indiana would be huge win. 

Regardless, college basketball is cyclical and so I am less concerned with where the kids are coming from and more about the team composition. Without Yogi and Bryant now presumably being a (the?) focal point of the team, I'm interested to see how the style of play changes.
