Newkirk, RoJo, CuJo, Morgan, DD likely starter 5.

I like DD as TB successor. As time goes on, TB is sadly less impressive to me. I am hoping he gets his mojo back.

What OG brings is likely irreplaceable. Justin Smith sorta fits that mold.

What we lose from Blackmon could be tough. Hoping CuJo can continue to improve and be ready for major minutes.

More encouraged than I was in the summer, that's for sure.

To me some of the big keys, not only for IU to reach it's ceiling this year but to maintain next year, are CuJo and Davis developing and making a consistent impact. Davis is on good pace, but it would really help this season and for an increased role next year if CuJo can turn into a reliable/consistent scorer off the bench this year.

Held scoreless in the first quarter, the Indiana-bound senior scored 8 points in a row in the second quarter, and the Patriots led 28-24 at halftime.

Smith finished with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds and also had 3 hammering blocks. He also played tough defense on Prospect forward Matt Szuba, who didn't score but grabbed 9 rebounds.

 

Next: Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic Dec. 27-30. Stevenson finished 3rd in this tournament last year and Smith was the first underclassmen to make the all-tournament team.

I don't think he has his playmaking ability. He also probably won't have as many bad plays as Troy. Lower ceiling, higher floor. Developing his jumper will be huge for Smith.

Stevenson dropped their first game in the Hinsdale Classic and plays Crete-Monee @ 2 pm today.

Justin Smith had a very slow start but a very strong finish in a close 47-42 loss to Hinsdale Central. The Indiana commit put up 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks. He hit a clutch 3 towards the end of the game and got a lot of points off cutting to the basket. Strong, above-the-rim athlete that is hard to slow. Very versatile player capable of playing the 2-4 positions.

Justin Smith totaled a game-high double-double of 25 points and 15 rebounds to lead Stevenson to a 65-46 win over Crete-Monee in the consolation bracket of the 2016 Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.

Stevenson (8-2) never trailed in the contest. With the score even at 2-2, the Patriots rattled off 11 straight points to open up a quick double-digit lead. They led by as many as 18 points late in the second quarter, but Crete-Monee (6-5) used a 9-0 run to close the quarter and bring the deficit down to just nine points (30-21) at the break.

Smith and Willie Herenton combined to score over half of Stevenson's points in the victory. Smith pumped in 25 points while adding 15 rebounds, four assists and two steals. Herenton added 14 points in the victory while Aidan O'Connell scored seven. The Patriots shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the floor, including 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from three-point distance.

Stevenson will face Saint Viator in Thursday's consolation semifinal at 2:00 p.m.

HINSDALE, Ill. - Stevenson downed St. Charles East 56-41 to capture the consolation bracket championship at the 2016 Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.

Justin Smith, Willie Herenton and Jackson Qualley combined to score 52 of the Patriots 56 points to lead Stevenson (10-2) to the victory.

Trailing 6-5 midway through the first quarter, the Patriots closed the quarter on an 11-0 run to build a 16-6 lead in the process. The Patriots would not trail for the remainder of the contest despite St. Charles East (10-4) pulling to withing five points late in the second quarter. Stevenson led 22-15 at the half.

St. Charles East pulled to within four points on two ocassions in the third quarter and Stevenson's lead was just six points (32-26) after three, but the Patriots dominated the fourth quarter. Stevenson opened the quarter with an 11-2 run to take a 15-point cushion following a three-pointer from Herenton. The Patriots led by as many as 17 before coasting to the 15-point win.

Stevenson shot 47.5 percent (19-of-40) from the floor, including 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from three-point range. The Patriots dominated on the glass, outrebounding St. Charles East 27-13 and turning nine offensive rebounds into 11 second-chance points. The Patriots did not allow St. Charles East to collect an offensive rebound in the win.

Herenton led the way with 19 points for Stevenson while Smith totaled 17 points and eight rebounds. Qualley finished with 16 points and five rebounds, knocking down four three-pointers in the win.

St. Charles East shot 45.2 percent from the floor (14-of-31), including 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from downtown. Justin Hardy paced the Saints in the loss with 15 points and four rebounds. Nate Ortiz added 14 points while Zach Robinson scored seven.

 The tournament’s leading scorer at 21.5 points per game, finished just shy of averaging a double-double while finishing at 9.8 rebounds per game. Smith shot 60.7 percent from the floor while also dishing out 10 assists over the four days.

Smith and Stevenson HS defeated Lincolnshire 64-50.  Smith with 27 pts. and 7 reb.       

Quick first step on his drives to the bucket.  Needs to improve his FT shooting.at least from what I saw in this game.  Missed 4 or 5 in the 4^th Q alone.  Interesting to be able to watch Smith play a full game rather than just see him in mixtapes.  I thought he looked very smooth, didn’t force things and played under control.
