(2017) SF Justin Smith to IU

Recommended Posts

Solid get if he comes here. Forgive me, but really wish this was our first commit. Just don't see the fit/need with Durham. If this hurts our chances with Wilkes though, gotta question it a little bit

I pretty much agree here. By all accounts Smith is an A+ kid and Durham is as well. I just wish Durham would have had a booming summer to quell the doubts. Long lefty guard is intriguing especially as a super quality kid though.

I imagine smith will back up the 3 and 4 until he can take over the 3 after Wilkes leave.

Was about to say this exactly.

I'm sure we have told Wilkes many, many times how important he is and that he would be "the guy" and Wilkes knows that about himself as well. Smith is a 3/4 for year player while Wilkes is 1/2 year max and would start from day one. I don't think this would play much into Wilkes decision and I'm sure Tommy Boy is smart enough to explain this. Not too worried about it but definitely excited about the prospect of getting Smith. Hoping all works out tonight.

Agreed on Durham. If he exploded this summer I would be more than okay with it. His stats weren't that impressive and with the others guards we currently have, I just don't think it's a good get right now.

Durham seems like that guard you bring along slowly and then could be a lock down defender.  My only issues with Durham is bringing in Green and CuJo after his commitment, Green more so than CuJo.  If I remember correctly.

His teammate blew up over the summer.  Durham could definitely have a place on the team but there's just a logjam at the guard spot in the coming year.

Durham's AAU teammate Collin Sexton just absolutely exploded this summer and what we don't know is if Durham's numbers weren't all that impressive because Sexton unexpectedly became the go-to-guy on the floor and Durham became the second fiddle.  Just one of those things that we can speculate on but we just don't know the answer.   And FWIW, Durham has been steadfast in his outward commitment to our program, but it's always possible that as the dust begins to settle on the '17 class, he begins to waver as others give us verbals.  We'll know for certain come November 9.

Good point. He could turn out to be great, we will just have to see. This is more about Crean's recruiting philosophy to me and less about Durham. I really wish he would hold back on offering kids of this caliber until later, after we get an idea of what our main targets will do
