Tom Crean Update from Fred Glass

Recommended Posts

If Crean is indeed back next year, how far does a successful 2015-16 season set this program back?

The Big ought to be stronger next year so wins will be harder but the addition of a talented front court player might get us to about the same place as this year.

We'll be young forever so there's that perpetual built in excuse.

The in game coaching won't change because he's inflexible and will never try a different style.

Another year is just more of the same.

agree. It helps when you recruit good enough to have Quentin Snider riding the pine. Kid has been terrific. Crean has never recruited the bench to the level of the elite recruiters. And I bet Quentin Snider wouldn't have transferred if he finished the year on the bench either.

I agree Snider would not have transferred or perhaps forced to transfer. It is about building a team, and providing a culture of winning. It is about taking the players you recruited and have so much faith in, and making them better players who will contribute to the team cause. It is also about fulfilling your initial recruiting promises to the parents and players.

I'm okay with no move as long as it means we get someone like Stevens, preferably Stevens himself.  Otherwise Glass is just trying to feed us garbage about what his expectations are (BTW, why the hell is he just now setting those expectations?), because we have enough of a sample size to confidently say that Crean will never reach them.

I like Miller, but I'd like to see more from him before I'd be willing to call him for a job of this caliber because right now he really just has that one year and even Crean had that.

One more note on waiting on the right move and Miller, if we wait to make the right move and not just a move, it does give us one more year to judge Miller by.

I just don't want to fire CTC and hire someone like Jamie Dixon which is what I fear more than anything.

.

Do you think we'd be okay as a fan base with a coach whose lifetime record was 102-50 and two games under .500 last season?

I think our fan base would be restless with Almost anyone.

Let's say we were Michigan State... We'd be upset that IZZO just couldn't get over the hump since 2000. Elite 8s and final fours are great and all, but we want BANNERS!!!!!!

What I meant was, would our fan base be okay hiring a guy with the record I posted?

Hey, we could get a banner.  Crean may decide to hang a Sweet 16 banner.  That's the closest he'll ever get, but that's beside the point.

And I think the fans would be ecstatic with the job Izzo has done this season.

If yogi and troy go pro and we dont get a solid big man will glass still consider the team crean is building good? It seems like a bold thing to say without knowing for sure what our team will be

My guess is they already have a good idea of what those guys will be doing.

That said, I'm officially off the Fred Glass bandwagon after yesterday. Releasing that statement at 5 p.m. on a Friday was a coward move and tells me he was afraid of the reaction he'd get, which tells me either his ego is too big to admit the extension was a mistake or he's just too fond of Crean to cut the cord. Gutless athletic director leading a program that doesn't really care if it's elite anymore.

Some coaches know how to prepare backups and rework the game plan going forward in order to succeed. Louisville is not as good of a team without Jones but you have to credit Pitino for adapting and giving his team the best opportunity to win. Crean/Glass use these type of incidents as back pocket excuses as to why the team has not met expectations. There are other coaches who lose good players during the season and still succeed, and there are coaches out there who will look to use the unfortunate situation as an excuse.

Likewise there are coaches whose teams always play hard and, though they may be somewhat lacking in quality players are always tough games. Guys like Smart at VCU come to mind. Guys who, no matter what their team looks like talent wise, will fight to the end. I'm not saying that I want Smart (I don't), but Marshall appears to be one of those guys - along with the BS and BD coached teams. Crean has shown an abiding ability to fold down the stretch. Sort of reminds me of what The General once said about Dale Brown.

Glass will just use the fact that they went pro as an excuse and say you can't blame Crean for that and then give Crean another extension followed by a banner and S16 rings.

Kidding, Kidding. But not really

Right on. "Real fan" arguments are just silly.

Besides, all the real fans are over on the Texas message board singing CTCs praises and leaving copies of Austin Living magazine on Joani's porch.

Seriously though...not a single Crean mention on the Texas 247 board. :( :( :( :(

I understand your point on Miller, and honestly I need to do some more research on him.  I am to the point though of wanting to make sure we do our due diligence and not pass over the next big thing just because we don't want to risk it with an up and comer.

Some fans on here think Bobby is the greatest. What do them fans think of this?

'94-'95 > 19-12/11-7. First round exit.
'95-'96 > 19-12/12-6. First round exit
'96-'97 > 22-11/9-9. First round exit.
'97-'98 > 20-12/9-7. Second round exit.
'98-'99 > 23-11/9-7. Second round exit.
'99-'00 > 20-9/10-6. First round exit.

Remember when I worked at the HT Bob Hammel told me Knight knew he would lose support once he stopped winning. He used the word dinosaur.

Funny how those numbers you shared were considered losing back then.
