Is there a such thing as shooting midrange jump shots in college basketball?

I mean you see one every once in a while but mostly it's layups/dunks or three point attempts. I guess it just goes to show how the game is changed and has to adapt to a great deal of freshman sophomore playing.

Analytics says that's the worst possible shot to take. Doesn't give you the reward of 3 points and isn't as easy as a layup. Unless you are absolutely wide open, there really isn't a reason to shoot a midrange jumper.

If you can shoot it or are told to shoot it because going down the middle and shooting an easy layup isn't going to work every time but you have to make sure that it is a good shot.

I agree completely. I think a five foot floater/bank shot is so much better for a guard because of the size disadvantage. I wouldn't doubt that they are taught to attack the big men to draw fouls, even though it rarely works.

How do "analytics" jive with every basketball Hall Of Fame loaded with guys that regularly curled off of the elbow and hit a jump shot?  Jordan, Bird, Magic, Russell, Malone, Isiah, May, Buckner, Cheaney, King, Worthy and so many others.  That is why zone defenses work so well these days.  No one cuts across the lane in the middle of the zone and knocks down a 15 footer anymore.  It is a lost fundamental of the game.

If you watch some of the great scorers in college basketball, they still use it. Ive followed BYU for years and Tyler Haws from BYU is one of the only ones to still make great use of the midrange game.

Not only that but those players, the ones that I watched, had options off that curl; knockdown the open midrange jumper, hit the screener rolling to the basket, OR take a few more dribbles into the lane for a layup.  Now, it's one v one, take your man to the basket or try a step back.

I read an interesting article, by Kyle Neddemriep, about Herman Sayger, an Indiana native. He possible came up with the idea of the 3 pointer. He also tried to implement a 1 point for close range shots and 2 points for mid range. Can you imagine how different the game would be today if you only got 1 point within a certain range. He also was behind the idea to get rid of the jump ball after every score. Interesting read if you have time.
