Potential fallout from coaching change

Recommended Posts

I'm not saying keep of fire him but understand if he goes, it's 2008 all over again. JBJ, RJ, Yogi and Troy are gone. What, you honestly think they are playing for the name on the front of the jersey? Recruits that we have contacts with won't come. Oh yeah, and one more thing,

No one has ever given me a good reason why a guy would leave the BOSTON CELTICS, one of the premier franchises in all of American professional sports, to coach a 7th place team in the B1G who's fan base just ran off the coach that won them their first regular season title in 20 years less than 2 years ago.

Just saying, watch what you wish for.

If 12 mill or even 7mil is the buyout...how much money is IU losing in sales? U of L out sells everyone and rakes in CASH. If IU was performing how many sales would it take to cover the buyout?

There are plenty of reasons Brad would leave.

-The fact he came so close to a championship twice and is hungry to get one in the NCAA.

-The fact that Boston won't be good until 2017-2018

-There is far less travel and games in the NCAA than the NBA. He can be close to home.

-Everyone is asking him to come coach at Indiana.

-his dad played football at IU. He supposedly grew up an Indiana fan.

Make a choice. Keep Crean or fire him. Either way you are wishing for something. Warning folks about getting what you wished and then not taking a position is silly. If you want Crean that comes with risks too.

And you seriously believe that he would leave the Celtics, the NBA and all that money because IU fans really want him to and his dad played football there.

Delusional.

What kind of message does that send to current players, future players and future coaches? You want Yogi and them to stick around, but the students boycott the last game of the season because of the coach. Boo them when they walk off the court. Yeah right.
Also, what coach wants to step into a situation like that?

It could mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. If the goal is only to keep yogi around, that might piss him off and he bolts, which was rumored he may do after this year anyway, either to the NBA or another college as a grad transfer. My goals for this program are far bigger than Kevin ferrell.

As far as a coach goes...if the guy you are set to hire isn't confident in his ability, it would probably scare him off. If the guy has supreme confidence in himself, I doubt it would even factor into his decision making

Keep him. IU has had 4 coaches, counting DD, in he last 15 years. Can't build a consistent winner if you can't consistently lose coaches.

Depending on where you are from, indiana university is a far bigger deal than the boston celtics.

Iu can pay him more than the celtics, he makes about as much as crean does now.

The nba draw is different for everyone, Stevens doesn't strike me as a guy who will be in the nba forever.

You call others delusional, I call you ill informed

Maybe so, but it's not only about keeping Yogi. That could be enough to piss off a bunch of players.

And the fanbase actively campaigning against and boycotting a coach is a giant red flag to future coaches, whether they are confident in their ability or not. I know you only need 1 guy to take the leap, but at this point this list of people worth firing Crean for is incredibly short.

We can have this guy if we are willing to show him we REALLY want him.  That means make him the highest paid coach in college basketball.  And yes, we are Indiana Freakin University and we have huge bucks available...Time to go show Brad the "love".....

Would you settle for the 2nd highest paid coach? Coach K is at $9.7M/year now according to USAToday.com (Crean isn't listed b/c it only included coaches in the tourney last year, I believe).

I remember uk and unc being fairly ruthless with their place holder coaches....didn't seem like it screwed them over at all.

I only know about "school pay" but Crean makes $3.16M a year base salary via his contract extension. Surely he has endorsements, as well. He would be 9th on that list in terms of base pay, barely behind Matta.

For comparison, Stevens has a 6 year/$22 million contract with Boston. That puts him at $3.67M per year base. I'm sure he has better incentives than Crean, but it's clear that IU can throw a little more money at Stevens to give him a raise. It wouldn't be much different than where they are at now (though that doesn't account for the huge buyout they will owe Crean).

Who said anything about a place holder? I would rather see them keep Crean if they are waiting for Stevens.

Well then screw Stevens, let's go get Gregg Popovich. He's a Hoosier and we really want him! That should be enough right?
