Potential coaching change suggestions

Recommended Posts

So what are you hearing, '87?

Look back to the future, before Davis there was an IU name under serious consideration, but it was nixed due to outside political pressure. Former player, with experience who has strong group of coaching friends that would make up a great staff of assistants, many of them not well known outside coaching circles.
IU fans would go nuts if this one came through, he would be a perfect fit.
I believe the talk of Stephens is unrealistic, and as good of a coach as he is, I don't believe he has the desire to take the position if offered.
All of this is moot until Crean wears out his welcome to the tune of $12 mil.

Any truth to the poster on the old scout site saying that Stevens has an out in his Celtics contract for Indiana? I checked his history and he hasn't posted their since 08. But other long ago posters have been popping up lately.

I'm not sure you an bring in an 2-3 year interim coach like that in college. Kids want to know their coach will be there for as long as they are in college. Just my two cents.

Aloha, you're right, but there are great players out there that would love to strap on the old IU, regardless. I just want kids who will work all forty, good or bad.

It's not 12 million. Its reduced at the end of the season and reduced more come July. It will negotiated and he will get payments. He will take a job and his salary there will drop the buyout even more. Crean has already worn out his welcome for $12 million in the majority of fans minds.

Agreed, I would love a team full of players willing to run through a wall for the name on the front of the uniform and the coach on the bench.  I just think those players are few and far between these days.  If you can get a handful of them that can lead you have something good though.

If you're talking about Alford, I could see that getting some mixed reactions...

If this is Alford, fans would definitely go nuts. Half would go nuts because it's Alford and he's the Indiana hero. The other half because we would be downgrading from Crean in literally every aspect.

I expect some turnover. We will be the same team next year, living and dying by the 3. No impact big. Need to make the change now so we have some options and give the new guy time to settle in.

Yes, but the point I am making, which is just an educated guess, is that I think that Crean will be allowed to stay unless the roster implodes. The belief will be that things will be better next year with another year of strength for the freshmen (maybe even optimism that April becomes serviceable) and a couple of nice pieces added through recruiting.

I hope that if a move is made it is not a slow crumble but takes place swiftly so that we are not looking at Yogi and Troy going pro then months of trying to hold it together only to see it all fall apart in the early part of the summer when there is no way we can hire anyone...

. I think that specific verbiage would have surfaced publicly by now. I wouldn't hold a ton of stock in it. I'm sure as hell going to waste an hour of my time trying to find out though.

Add to it the assistant coaches.  I wonder if any of them would make a jump if given the chance.  That would be rather telling.

Wow I have no idea if your info is accurate but that is really a blast to the past. I just cannot see this being a good idea.

Wow, does this really have legs? I wonder if we have split trustees again and the same ones from back then are trying to reload this. I do believe Alford had a staff ready to go but, now, I just can't see it.

Was just reading thru some old articles and it was talking about how Brad Stevens told UCLA he would never sign a contract without and "out" in it.

It also mentions he had just signed a 12 year extension with Butler when he left for the Celtics. His wife a life long Hoosier is the one who apparently negotiates his contracts since she is a Employee relations lawyer and is basically her job anyways. Maybe I am a sunshine pumper but all of these signs are positives for us Brad Stevens advocates.

I love Steve Alford. Once upon a time, I wanted him to be RMK's successor but that time has passed.

I just hope he does a great job at UCLA. Any time one of our own has success coaching elsewhere, it reflects well on IU, IMO.

Not to derail, but the "one of our own" reminded me- Stew Robinson is coaching at UIC. He has some interest in my cousin in 2 yrs. I was totally excited when my cousin showed me the letter!

Like Calbert and lead recruiter Johnson and our strength coach taking his "dream Job". We have collectively ex head coaches as assistants yet we still play our smallest player in the post. Plus do the stand around panick and throw up a prayer or how's that ball taste offense only all that experience can draw up. They're all nice just like Crean, and I hope they find secure jobs coaching somewhere else. Crean can be they're highest reference just like Glass can be Creans and vice versa.

I've heard this too. There's a clause in his contract. Don't know how true it is but its sure is interesting
