IU vs. Purdue Postgame Thread

Recommended Posts

Well, to paraphrase coach Knight, "When disappointment is inevitable, you may as well lie back and enjoy it".

And certainly, under coach Crean, disappointment is inevitable. Once we all understand this, our frustration level will go down exponentially.

This game was very telling to me for the rest of our season and somewhat for our future. Hanner is a backup post player. He is not someone you want playing 25-30 minutes. I keep waiting for his Landon Turner awakening. It isn't going to happen. Despite scoring some points, his post defense and rebounding is still very poor.

We have little reason to expect we will be any stronger inside next year unless we get a 4th year post player to transfer in and push one of our current scholarship players to the curb. That is unlikely to happen. I actually know a person that fits that description, but I don't think he is the answer we need either.

I like Tom Crean as a person. I don't like what I see moving forward. Our two recruits are thin players that aren't any better equipped to play the post than Holt. Holt is not a D1 post player. He is a stretch 4 without an outside shot that limits his range.

I am not usually negative and have been standing by giving CTC time to pull the program back up. Our roster balance is poor. Unless we over-sign a 3rd player for the post, our prospects won't be any different next year. I hope we run the table and the team makes me eat my words. Long term, I think we need someone that can build a Big 10 type team.

Here's the thing, you can probably search this or another message board and find a post from me in the preseason saying that 11 wins in conference would be a good season. We all agreed the expectations were low coming into the season, you're spot-on there.

But, expectations change as the season moves along. When the team starts Big Ten play 5-1, with wins @Neb, @Ill and vs. ranked OSU and Maryland teams, the expectations change. When you work yourself into the top 25 during arguable your toughest stretch of the season, the expectations change.

Since that stretch IU has gone 3-5, and outside of the Minny game, hasn't looked good doing it. Losing @OSU, @Purdue and @Wisconsin are certainly justifiable losses to an extent, but we looked terrible doing it, which is concerning. This with a coach who has a perception, whether justified or not, of his teams faltering down the stretch.

What I want to know is how people let one game cloud their judgment; I know, I know, you have seven years. That's crap. This season has gone as expected. Not what anyone wants. At all.

If we could have fielded players from the Helen Keller school of gifted athletes, we'd have witnessed a better defensive showing. In fact, Helen Keller herself, who died in 1968, given a proper uniform and deodorant after exhumation, would have looked more fluid in the post.

According to TMZ, writer Angelo Pizzo is penning a sequel to "Hoosiers" where coach Norman Dale, now well in to his nineties, comes out of retirement to save the Indiana Hoosier's basketball program. Reuniting his players from Hickory, most of which are now in their seventies and suffering from various ailments associated with advanced age, they employ a little used defensive scheme called the "man to man", and like the Phoenix, rise from the ashes to hang yet another banner in Assembly Hall. In one scene of particular poignancy, Gomer Crean, the local small town lush, stumbles on to the court, swearing to all and sundry that "it wasn't his fault, it wasn't his fault, it wasn't his fault". Approached by new AD, Robert Knight, Crean is calmly escorted off the court to behind the mezzanine, where he is soundly beaten by Knight, using Martha the Mop Lady's bucket.

Dude, that's ****** up. I knew wade too... You realize he's from Bloomington right?

I hope mods punish you accordingly...

Was kind of hard not to know he was from Bloomington if you were a student at the time. There were posters all over town wondering "HAVE YOU SEEN WADE??"

meanwhile in an electrical closet in West Lafayette.....

If you watch the postgame presser with the players found over on insidethehall, blackmon mentions how the gameplan was to eliminate purdue's 3 point shooting.  Haha wtf crean!?  If you look up the stats for purdue's 3pt. and 2pt. shooting percentages, you will find that purdue shoots 3rd worse in the big ten for 3pt. attempts making just around 31%.  Now look at their 2 pt. field goal percentage which is around 52%, clearly because of the two guys down low.  We took it on the chin in West Lafayette mainly because we could not stop the two big guys by fronting them and playing them one v one.  Same happened tonight which shows a clear lack of understanding and ability to coach (configuring a gameplan) by Crean.  Time and Time again they simple threw it over our guy fronting the post for an easy deuce.  No adjustments made on defense to combat this, which had me screaming at the tv haha. Double team, triple team, anything to stop the big men and make them shoot, noting that purdue only made 2 3's and it wasn't our defense because we all know we don't play any.  Moral of the story is Crean can't coach to save his life, plus he's getting paid over 3 milli a year! Our team plays with no discipline (especially on d, boxing out, knowing time/situation, off court issues), we make no in game adjustments, subbing is questionable, gameplans suck, and to top it all off every postgame presser from crean seems like he just woke up from a blackout and judging from his comments has no idea what the hell happened or why.  It's unlikely crean gets fired after this season because of the 8 mil. buyout and the fact his boss, Fred Glass, is attached to the hip of crean and if he gets fired, Glass's time as AD is over.  That is why I make the suggestion we revamp the coaches around crean, making moves to bring in former players such as Buckner, Jefferies, etc. to be assistants to crean and bring the discipline and knowledge of the game they learned from Knight.  Also think these type of guys will get through to the players better than crean because he obviously cant.  That is all, I feel much better now

No argument with 90% of this post, however bringing in Buckner & Jeffries is the very definition of rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
