Thinking out loud about our big man situation....

Or we could hope Mosquera-Perea and Holt can continue to develop so we aren't too desperate for another big until after next season.

That is probably a bit much to expect them to fill the gap game-after-game the whole season through like a true big 6'9' or more.

Don't forget, Emmitt is a very young freshman, and I remember reading that he still may be growing. A 6'8" Holt with a summer of conditioning is a legit big.

Holt could be. He seems to really attack rebounds. It would help him to grow a little more or put on some real beef.

If our top 8 players return next year I think we are easily top 20 level team. If HP, Holt make a big jump or some 5* big not on the roster join the team we could be top 10.

While adding a superb 2015 big -- grad transfer or otherwise -- would be great, this is why failing to do so isn't necessarily a death knell. Yes, neither Hanner nor Emmitt is 7', but as Stuhoo points out, perhaps Emmitt isn't done growing.

The progress of both of them this year has been encouraging. Both have the wingspan and leaping ability to contest shots without fouling, and both seem to know their roles offensively. Hanner has elite athleticism and his progress defensively and on the boards is encouraging. Emmitt has tremendous awareness and footwork for a freshman.

Defense has been this year's team's problem so far, but check out this graph via UMHoops:

IU's post-up defense isn't its problem; it's middle of the B1G pack.

Additionally, there aren't too many college bigs that truly dominate on both ends year-to-year -- skilled, fit 7'ers are rare enough to get paid at the pro level even if they're a bit raw. Heck, maybe a year of seasoning for April will make him dependable enough for high-leverage minutes against overpowering opposing centers next year. He wouldn't have to play 25 mpg, but what if he were solid for 10?

Finally, I assume any additional big would usurp minutes from Hanner/Holt/etc. rather than complement them, unless the offense changes drastically during the offseason. (See Alex of ITH's second answer from yesterday's mailbag.)

Is Perea hurt? They said something along those lines on Peegs.

What I could gather from Peegs thread titles only is that the dreaded boot is back, and that this is not a new thing this year for Hanner.

At least I hope that's all there is to it.

Most likely nothing to worry about. The staff has a tendency to have players where boots as a precaution. Word is that Vonleh and Hanner wore one basically all season last year

It's hard for me to compare that 91-92 team to this Hoosier team because of many factors. That 91-92 team had plenty of size on it, all while lacking a true back to the basket post player, we had Eric Anderson at around 6'8", Alan Henderson 6'9", Matt Nover 6'8", and Calbert Cheaney at 6'7."  We could really throw a lot of size at teams from an Offensive standpoint because all of those guys, but Nover had a very good perimeter game, and from a Defensive standpoint with the pressure that our guards from that 91-92 squad put on teams our post defense was solid.  Our Defensive rotations and help defense on those late 80's early 90's teams was absolutely fantastic.

This years team got off to a Horrible Start from a Defensive standpoint and a lot of that had to do with Interior Defense and our guards keeping their man in front of them.  It's gotten better, but I'd say that Defense is our achilles heel this year, while it was a major strength for the team that you're comparing it to.

Moving forward I really like the potential of Hanner, Holt, Devan, and Juwan Morgan.  I would like to have one more big on this team for Defensive purposes, but I think Crean has done a good job so far with protecting this weakness.

Alan Henderson is still the only player to be  top  5 in scoring ,rebounding, blocked shots & steals for IU.He's an all time great.

Couple that with Nover who is arguably better than any big on this squad and that comparison doesn't hold water. That was one of the Hoosier's best squads ever even though they didn't win the title. Thanks Teddy.attachicon.gif1992.jpgJust look at the players on that team!

probably my favorite IU squad of all time...doesn't hurt that I spent my childhood with one of these guys...ahh...what memories.

Every kid on that roster could play. Well, Pat K. not so much. I still boo Teddy V. every time I see him because of that team.
