Thinking out loud about our big man situation....

Recommended Posts

I was just an average athlete---but my brother was all-conference and all-state honorable mention in basketball and I got to watch him play against some of the southern Indiana guys like Damon and Pat Knight in school and/or summer ball.  That was a lot of fun---I remember Damon coming into his school as an 8th grader and he was already huge and dunking so hard I was afraid the rim would come off.  Good times!

I was so excited to see Damon come to IU---I remember going to the IU Auditorium when Damon was still in high school and that's when Knight said Bailey was better then any guard we had at IU at the time.  Like Graham---Damon was beat up by the time he got to college as well and if healthy he would have been even more awesome.  He still was on the IU all-time top 10 list in multiple categories when he graduated.  An Indiana legend!

Good God, Rebel...

it's quite possible that you and I squared off in high school...

As you can tell--I'm partial to our southern Indiana Hoosier ballers!

It's a territorial thing!

Don't even get me started on Calbert from Evansville----he was the biggest surprise in my IU years as he came in underrated due to the injury during his senior year in high school and became the big ten leading scorer.  Those were the glory days I hope we get back to-----I remember going to almost every IU home game for about a 7 year stretch----and we just did not lose at home---it was awesome.

All of us IU fans want that back----hopefully with Crean or whoever comes after him if he can't get it done!

My brother may have played against you if you went to Borden.

I went to a different high school then him and was only an intramural BBaller---my only claims to fame are trophies for free throw shooting contests and I was a starter on a dorm intramural team at IU that won a championship. I could hit the open 3 pointer.

Of course---I let my brother know that I made him what he became by taking it to him daily at any basketball court we could find. LOL!

I am from the Evansville area as well. Still cannot believe that Harrison team with Calbert and Walter McCarty never even won a Sectional. That should tell you how good hoops were in the late 80's all the way up to the late 90's.

People talk about the instate talent that got away and I cant recall Walter ever being mentioned.

Slick Rick poached him right out of our back yard and he was an important piece to that powerhouse Ky team.

Don't know if there was much interest either way as far as we were concerned but man he would've looked good in the candy stripes.

Still have the Sports Illustrated with Damon on the cover when he nearly single handedly  took down #1 UK.

If I remember right, he was prop 48. That could have kept Knight from being interested.

yup...spent a lot of time at each other's house back in the day...talking middle school...then he left the small town of Borden and went to Floyd Central...and I stayed at Borden...

Wow. He would have had monster #'s at Borden. Of course he wouldn't have had the Gibson's as teammates to take the focus off of him

I so wonder what would have happened if Pat had been healthy at IU.

He had a pure shot and I loved his great battle with Damon Bailey---I think it was in the  regional or semi-state championship.

'89 Seymour regional. Morning game. Pat 38. Damon 37. IIRC.

I paid $40 for my ticket.

Did your brother play in college Rebel?

Unfortunately not.

He had several NAIA---D3---and a few D2 offers but chose to go to IU with the hope of becoming a BBall manager for Knight---but he did not get selected.

He was the leading scorer on our intramural championship team---and we had a blast playing together but I wish he would have transferred and played somewhere because I know he missed it and he was talented.

Got it too!

I am such a BBall junkie that I took my family on annual pilgrimages to Btown almost every year when they were growing up over spring break------and on the way there or back---we would go through French Lick and see Larry Bird's residence (mother's home) with the large outdoor court ---and we would go through Heltonville to see the Damon Bailey monument and gym where he played in grade school before going to BNL.

We also always tried to catch the annual Damon Bailey barnstorming tours through southern Indiana such as in Princeton and Boonville and would go to those games and get autographs of the IU players

Good times.

People will never understand the depth and passion we Hoosiers have for our BBall.

Love it. I finally made it to French Lick this fall. I was the same way in my area (Old NCC). Richmond, New Castle, Anderson with the Wigwam, Muncie Central. Great Indiana basketball history.

Oh yes---Alford Bailey---I made that pilgrimage once too!  Admit it---you're a BBall junkie too!

I had to see Hinkle--- the Wigwam---- and  the Fieldhouse in New Castle.  Alford is one of my all-time favorite players (coach is a little different story) and I had to see his home court !

In the south---the Hatchet House in Washington is a cool---big old stadium (Zeller country) ---and most of our southern teams have lost at least once in the small Lion's Den at Loogootee---which I call The Pit. Jack Butcher was a killer Coach who had the stall ball game down to an art.  Also---been to games at BNL---to root against The Stars but of course I checked out all the Damon Bailey photos and trophies while I was there!

Good times!

Anybody else have some cool gyms they have seen---small or large?

I've always liked the sunken gyms.
