Making room for 2015 class?

Recommended Posts

You can't still think James is NBA bound? The kid is excellent, but needs more time to develop his size, defense, and handles.

NBA loves potential. The draft class isnt all that deep, so i wouldnt be surprised. Plus, didnt he say he wanted to be a one and done player beforr coming to IU?

they love potential in an NBA ready body. Or a freak athlete with solid skills. James is gonna need some time, regardless of his one and done aspirations. He'll most certainly make it to the league, but it'd be shocking to see him go so soon.

too bad BtownBanners doesn't have a resident lawyer that knows anything....

People got all on my junk last time I talked about it. Unless we have another resident lawyer...

If we haven't already exercised options to terminate the contract (behind the scenes) then it's probably not good news anyway, not without more bad off-the-court stuff.

Lots of lawyers may prove Crean doesn't deserve that buyout due to some fine print. Gotta wonder what the terms are??

We has cause with Sampson and still bought him out. Back then I remember the debate and at least part of the reason for not terminating with marginal cause reasons was it sent a poor message to replacement candidates.

If there was cause to terminate the contract then I could see how Glass' "Tom's not the problem, he's part of the solution" comments would undermine those arguments. I think we would still be talking a huge buyout.

glass can say whatever he wants right now he is behind him so what he says will b positive but if time comes to fire him he would b saying negative things for reasons to let him go. Imo

We has cause with Sampson and still bought him out. Back then I remember the debate and at least part of the reason for not terminating with marginal cause reasons was it sent a poor message to replacement candidates.

I remember the debate too and we rehashed it when I took a Drafting class because his contract was so poorly written. His "for cause" was really weak because the terms were too vague and it wasn't clear that even violation of NCAA rules was technically cause under his contract. They ended up settling because it was cheaper than fighting it out (and there was a donation of 550,000 right at crunch time) but it's possible that Sampson would have been able to fight it and get his entire buy-out. Couple of lawyers who drafted Sampsons contract no longer do work for IU.

That's why Crean's contract has specific language about violations, they'd learned a $750,000 lesson.

On the other hand, part of the lesson is also that you can convince a coach to settle for less if you have even a framework showing of cause and you have the resources to fight it. I said earlier in the thread that I didn't think that the off-the-court "cause" would be enough anymore, but mind you, I don't think it's enough to win. It's certainly enough to leverage. I would expect people to lose their jobs if we paid him more than 2-years salary on the way out and I would be very surprised to see the number over 5 million. It's realistic that it would be as low as a year's salary.

According to these two articles, it would cost $12 million to fire CTC before July 1, 2015. $7.5 million the following year.

• 2016-17: $4 million.
• 2017-18: $1 million.
• 2018-19: $1 million.
• 2019-20: $1 million.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, that contract is indescribably stupid.

He still hasn't shown up on any draft boards this season. It isn't like Vonleh who was in the lottery before he even put on an IU jersey. Blackmon is a great shooter but nothing else about his game stands out enough for him to even be considered for the lottery.
