The State of our program- How do you guys feel about it?

Recommended Posts

Basketball issues aside, I'm not feeling that great about the program as a whole. Just wanted your opinions.

I base my opinion on the following

-that the soccer program is not living up to it's rankings in recent years.

- Our stud baseball coach left, and now I'm left wondering if the baseball team was just a one hit wonder or something that's more consistent that could contend to go to Omaha.

- Women's basketball. The Coach defection took away my hope of it going anywhere.

- volleyball is a complete joke.

-football - I'm willing to give Coach Wilson one more year, but I'm not thrilled with the results thus far. One year we have great offense and awful defense, this year it's the reverse (defense is moderate).

-Wrestling is ranked in the top 20's consistently - I'm Ok with this.

-swimming is OK but a far cry from when we were once a dynasty.

I don't  know much about the other sports. Overall I'm not happy, and wondered if what I feel is up to par.

Is it just a phase or should we flush the entire administration ( AD- to towel boys), because this is just too constant for my liking.  Have at it.

Glass accomplished stability..but the job description says stability and success. I don't equate success with wins/losses mind you, but to say that any measure of success to this point has been sustained is an out and out lie.

Basketball is my biggest gripe.  We should be a top 25 type team all the time.  Top 3 or 4 in the BIG year in and year out.  NCAA qualifier every year or at least 6 out of 7 years or so.  That is my hope and should be our requirement.  I think the NCAA tournament is a crap shoot so I won't put expectations there because so much is about location, match ups, etc...

Football is not where I'd like and my expectations aren't even high.  I'd like to be a mid-level big ten team and a bowl 2 out of 3 years or so.

I think Baseball is still going to be good.  We just have to see if coach can get good results early and keep the recruiting momentum going.

WBB seems to be improving still.  wait and see on that too.

Soccer is okay where we are at I think.  We are underperforming slightly, especially in post season play but we are close and competitive.

Basketball is the biggest issue and football is running a close 2nd.  Our basketball program's momentum is terrible right now.  That is my biggest concern.  The recruiting issues are a window into our future and to me it isn't bright unless he can pull a miracle with the talent he has now.

Soccer won the national championship 2 years ago......

Yes but it was when were a very low seed.  Freitag got fired for less and he won a national championship as well, and as of right now had an overall better track record.  I know it might sound absurd, but I base success compared to how well we fared in the past and the possiblity of the future.  Historically, other then St. Louis ( they had success only in the 70's),  we are the standard for college soccer. With that comes higher expectations.

Basketball and Football are the keys to all IU sports programs---they produce the money---both are both solid but we need to take the next step.

IMO--this is a crossroads year for BBall and next year is a crossroads year for FBall.

I don't know if it's the Knight and Mallory curses or what---but both programs have suffered untimely misfortunes such as the Center transfer and DD injury in basketball and the Quarterback transfer and injuries in football.

Honestly---I don't think we lose to EWU in Bball with a healthy DD and ---we go bowling this year in football with a more experienced quarterback.

The standard for IUBBall has always been that a Coach cannot have 2 subpar years in a row---last year was one so I don't think Crean survives if he cannot get it done this year with 2 burger boys and a lot of 4 stars. In FBall---Wilson gets one more chance next year to get us to a bowl or it's time for a change there too.

That's my 2 cents----Soccer and WBBall and the other sports are fine----we just have to get the 2 big money makers---BBall and Fball right.

Our women's water polo is out of control good for a non-California team.

I actually do like this.  Yes I'm a huge basketball fan, but I'm a fan of all types of sports. Your talking to a person who went to Japan to watch a Koshein baseball game, a sumo wrestling Basho.

Well don't go to the women's water polo championships, you'll be disappointed. It's been like 20 years since a non-Californian team has made it past the first round.

Edit: I mean, I like it too. Don't get me wrong, I know it's a funny thing to know/use to defend how IU sports in general are doing, but it just happens to be the random sport that I know we do really really well at that probably no one goes to.

I know u meant no harm, I just like it. Prior to us no big ten team went to the college World Series prior to 1984. Streaks have to end sometime, and I like how we can be trailblazers. I'm just sad coach smith left. I hope we can still be a good program.

Was thinking about this the other day as a current student. I think soccer actually outperformed preseason expectations this year, and we won a title two season ago so I can't complain much. I don't follow too closely but I've heard that out soccer recruiting has dropped off lately though. I really like the new baseball coach so I have some hope there. Same with women's basketball player. We didn't suffer any transfers with Millers resignation and we signed some solid players for 2015 so I'm hopeful that we can keep the momentum going. For football, I'm not really sure what we can do. I don't think Wilson is the right guy, but other than making one of the lowest bowl games every other year or so, I'm not sure our football program will ever be much. The fact that our football program brings in less money than nearly all other major athletic conference programs hurts all of our athletic programs. In basketball, Crean has to go. I think with the right coaching hire (yes I do believe that a very good up and coming coach would come here) we could very quickly be a top 10 program again. I also think we need a new arena. Assembly hall isn't getting it done anymore and the 40 million dollar renovation isn't going to fix that. Recruits don't care about the history or tradition of the building, they want to be wowed by state of the art facilities. And as a student that regularly has to sit in the balcony, a building that provides a better experience for fans is needed as well. We just spent a ton of money on Memorial Stadium and our now planning to spend more and make it a full bowl, when we can't even fill half the seats. We need a new basketball arena. However, I think with the right coach we could become an elite program once again in no time.

Also, I don't know much about this, but our men's tennis coach was fired just last week for violations and misconduct. I believe secondary NCAA violations were committed and he tried to cover it up.
