Revised Season Expectations

Recommended Posts

As much as we want to see what Emmitt, Jeremiah, and MSB have got, Hanner needs to play A LOT, so that his instincts improve.

As far as instincts go they are something you are born with and come naturally. The problem with Hanner is he has none  and everything he does is reactionary. He is always a step behind the process because of it.

Holt showed more basketball instinct in the 4 minutes he was on the floor than Hanner ever has. While he may make the spectacular play and wow the crowd i don't know if Perea will ever be a starting caliber Big in this league. At this point he is a major defensive liability instead of an asset

.Holt has to play even if he's not the answer.Crean needs to get him time early and often or we will get eaten alive in the Big.

I wonder what our expectations will be like when we get to conference play.

I'm expecting to get hammered down low and hoping like hell shooting can overcome it.

I guess everyone's heard the old saying, live by the 3 die by it.I happen to think that's pretty accurate.

I can only speak for myself.

I really hate being a small team, it just reminds me so much of the last years of the Mike Davis tenure where we made average teams look so strong because we couldn't stop them in the post.  I just don't think that we should ever be this outmanned at a particular position.  It's such a slow painful death when teams abuse us every possession by getting high percentage looks, or drawing a foul against us.  I just hope that we can learn to play an effective Zone Defense to slow teams down and create turnovers.  Our man to man defense is a lil rough too.

I don't post much, but read it all and don't miss games. Ever. I enjoy reading both sides of each thread and have mixed feelings. One thing I can say for sure: HMP's offense isn't necessary with this team, nor will it be needed in most games. His lack of defensive understanding, however, is clear as day. Lamar easily scouted this and had their way with us down low. And the real problem: we didn't adjust. We don't have the depth to adjust. I'm not sure how ugly it will be, but when we face a well coached team that runs X's and O's, with a quality big man, we are in deep, deep doo-doo. Enter, Wisconsin. Enter, Louisville. Even Purdue scares me how, even though they're not well coached, but they have Hammons and he is smart. Hope I'm wrong. Would love to hear some feedback.

I slightly disagree about Purdue. Hammons certainly has the talent, but eh, I think he is overrated in terms of what he does

So officially, kenpom has us dropped to 34. Our offensive rating got better as we have moved from 17 to 14. However, no surprise, our defensive Stat has dropped from 53 to 81. The ap/coaches poll might be more forgiving but we have GOT to do something about our D. Unfortunately, it is part of the general plan now to let the play go once at Perea.

If we can just get Holt some more run and he proves useful, by design, Perea might turn his defense up.

To be more clear, I think some of Perea's lack of production on the defensive end (rebounds/blocks) may be completely by design. I'm seeing people harp on him for not improving much but really, maybe he is told to let plays go if he isn't in perfect position since we can outscore most people. That is what I'm seeing from my couch. He is letting some plays go and Crean is not even getting mad.

We have to play it smart right now until we get Holt up to speed.

Exactly.  Hammons has done nothing except for a 30 pt game against IU when his team got beat by 40.

He's such a waste of a 7 foot body.  If he's one of the conference's best big men, the conference is very down this year.

I like what I saw out of Holt.  He looked like he had some good basketball IQ and instincts.  It will be interesting to see how his minutes are handled over the next handful of games.  I want him ready for the B1G season.

I hope that's whats going on because that means there's some coaching going on.

I'm not totally convinced of that yet.

Ohhh yes I remember. So painful watching non stop bricks other than yogi. I still Beaty brains out how Vonleh for 3 wasn't a huge part of our offense. Even if their big face guarded him he could easily blow by them. Coach knows so much more than me but that one makes me crazy in the head

Ya know you have to just sit back and get a big smile on your face over how our SHOOTING and TURNOVERS have completely
changed since just last year.  Its incredible to me this has happened in just these four games!

LOL We REALLY sucked just four games ago!!!  Remember?

Agreed on the improvements mentioned Naples.  I love the genuine team chemistry as well.  I believe their appreciation for each other coupled with the aspects you've mention above will more than make up for a little size difference underneath.  Hanner and Holt are coming!
