Can Crean stay in Bloomington?

Recommended Posts

well at least I said if they lose a bunch it would go back that way. Yes r attendance is awesome because r fans r awsome I was just making a point not comparing situations. If u guys think we can play like crap and pack the house every game u r wrong but if u think we can do average and have good attendance this year I agree because we have exciting players. Sorry for getting u guys riled up

Since Assembly Hall opened IU has been in the top 15 in attendance. As we have bad years we drop from top 5 to top 15. Certainly a drop but the bigger drop is in funding.

Also just want to add that I am NOT a CTC fan. Never have been since day one. I personally think he is a great person, but being a good person doesn't mean you're a basketball coach. I think that he would make one hell of a associate head coach. Lol, seriously

Agree

My point was mostly that you're taking the extreme worst case scenario and using it to say,

if we lose a bunch it will go back to that way it just how it is

when that isn't how it is. There is a huge difference between doing average or even "play[ing] like crap" and 2008.

I know I'm rehashing the old, repeating the scoop, etc..
But, The odds for a sixth banner were so high in 2013. I can't remember them
Being that high since the 90's. We should've swept away everyone in the tourney. That's the truth. I'm not saying that falls all on the coach, but who does it fall on?

Sent from my iPhoney. Yo.

BubbleKnuts, I mainly agree, but I think you've overstated the quality of that team relative to other 2013 competitors.

Also, no one's happy that season ended the way it did. Beyond the offensive problems with Stracuse's zone, It's easy to play what if: Jordy/Elston/Creek were fully healthy, Roth had a roster spot instead of Jurkin, Perea hadn't lost valuable time to an undeserved suspension, Yogi had the confidence he does now, etc.

The fact is that single-elimination tournaments are inherently very random, and no team could reach the Final 4 with the regularity some IU fans feel entitled to.

Does this excuse that loss, or the problems since? Not entirely -- but expecting 2012-and-forward IU to perennially compete for championships (B1G & national) given where Crean inherited the team is short-sighted and underestimates the work of program-building.

Plenty might not want to hear it, but we still need to take the long view for program success. (A final note: I say all this believing IU can win somewhere between 20-22 games this year.)

Then let me ask an honest question.  How long do you think he needs to show he can compete consistently?  Keep in mind he has been a head coach for 15 years, and in that decade and a half he's never competed consistently or really done anything with much consistency.

People talk about Cal not being much of a coach, but he had accomplished more than Crean before he ever got the UK job.  He had 3 Elite 8s and 10* conference championships in 17 years under his belt BEFORE all the success he's had at UK.  In his first 15 (the same time frame as Crean)?  9 conference titles, 4 Sweet 16s and 2 Elite 8s.

The point is there is very little to base all this faith in Crean on, his history says he's not much of a coach.  Unless he improves drastically from a coaching standpoint he probably won't take us to where we should expect to be no matter how long he's given, and with that sample size I'd say he is what he is and what he is isn't very good.  If we gave his resume to a coach at a rival school we'd be fine if they kept him.

* Cal loses two conference titles due to his vacated seasons because he's scum

I think this is the most lucid argument against Crean I've seen. I'll simply say that the program baseline level is the highest it has been in awhile, and I don't believe anyone else with the integrity, academic focus, player development skill, recruiting ability, or offensive acumen of Crean is readily available.

Then anyone searching for a coach is in for a big disappoinment.

perfect response!

What would the Crean lovers rank Crean within just the Big Ten?

5th, 6th, 7th, 8th or worse? Some would argue his in game coaching to be even less.

Every single Big fanbase wants Crean to keep his job. That's scary!

All this, and there is no better coach available???

Crean has 15 years as a D-1 head coach - 9 at Marquette and 6 at IU. In his 15 years, he’s been to the NCAA tournament 7 times:

2001-02 Marquette (26-7) NCAA First Round

2002-03 Marquette (27-6) NCAA Fina Four (Dwayne Wade team)

2005-06 Marquette (20-11) NCAA First Round

2006-07 Marquette (24-10) NCAA First Round

2007-08 Marquette (25-10) NCAA Second Round

2011-12 Indiana (27-9) NCAA Sweet 16

2012-13 Indiana (29-7) NCAA Sweet 16

His overall record as HC is 291-193 (.601)

So, in 15 years, he’s gotten to the Sweet 16 (or beyond) 3 times. He’s coached 3 NBA lottery picks (Dwayne Wade, Vic and Cody).

Personally, I don’t see that as much of a resume.

One of the those sweet 16 teams was ranked number one and could have won the whole thing.
