WayneFleekHoosier Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 They begged him to reclassify because they didn't have a point guard and they needed one. Yes, but it was an emergency move and they bailed on him after 1 year. NCAA shouldn't be rent-a-point guard year by year. K then recruited over him immediately. K is wrong. He has had a terrible media relations year. Grayson tripping incidents, post game lie, and now a pretty obvious recruiting trick. He is virtually invincible though and this won't affect him much. I've lost some respect for him though. MadAboutIndiana 1 Quote

K begged him to reclassify because he had no stop gap for Tyus Jones. Then gave up on him. Dirty move. Nope. They begged Thornton to stay at Duke but his dad didn't like how he was being used and was in his ear about it. Thornton wasn't 'forced out' either. They learned in January that he likely wasn't coming back and then they offered Jack White. BlueDevil and Stuhoo 2 Quote

Either way you slice it, they recruited over him. Instead of developing him and sticking to their promises, they found a different player for the position they promised him. "Force" can be applied in a couple different ways. Quote

If you read Brandon Ingram's NBA declaration letter, Coach K promises nothing. Duke begged him to stay and Thornton couldn't take the heat of Jackson coming in. Sure it's a messy situation and both parties may be at fault but it's not like they buried him on the bench. He averaged 26 minutes a game with plenty of starts and didn't live up to the hype. They did the same thing to Quinn Cook when they brought in Tyus Jones and look what happened to Quinn. He bought in and had a ridiculous senior year and was a huge factor leadership wise in winning a title. I know everyone wants to blame K but no one forced Derryck out. This was he and his family's decision. KingPG21 1 Quote

How did they recruit over him though? Obi is about to retire because of chronic knee/back pain, so they'd have an open scholarship regardless. He was not forced out in any definition of the term. They do not have a PG on the roster or coming in. In fact they quit recruiting all 2017 PGs to show faith to him. Quote

The family definitely should have done a better job evaluating his readiness for college, but this is definitely an issue with the one-and-done recruiting model. Even if someone doesn't perform their best in year one, there's already someone else coming in the next year to replace them. Alford Bailey 1 Quote

WayneFleekHoosier Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 Frank Jackson is the new shiny object that will be afforded the PG keys. Of course he wanted Thornton to stay as the "back up" PG but that is not what he was recruited for. Depending on your definition of force I can see how he wasn't forced out. Some of you guys are seriously grasping at straws to come up with a anti-K narrative here I've never seen an elitist like this guy. Getting into it with Collin Hartman and other players over nothing, the Grayson Allen trash, his creation of and handling of the Dillon Brooks thing. He's a sore loser. Much like some IU fans with Stevens, he's been mythicized into some sort of miracle walking the Earth. On this issue, it's plain as day what happened. Duke used Thornton. He didn't land the guard he needed after Tyus Jones went one and done. They were always going to land a top 2016 guard. Thornton was simply a stop gap. Class of '66 Old Fart Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 Let's not be overly naive that Dukie is the only school that over recruits. Part of the reason this year is nearly a record, if not a record, for kids who have announced intentions to transfer. With social media, ESPN, etc., it gets so much more publicity. And the damn NBA doesn't help with the insistent on the 1 and done crap. As a coach, you really don't know who might be coming back so you have to keep recruiting. Also, after having coached a kid for a year, maybe you realize you missed and he's simply not going to be the contributor you need or expected. As of this date, we have no scholly's available yet CTC has several offers on the table. Isn't that an example of over recruiting? Go all the way back to the tenure of RMK and look at the roster changes from year to year and don't tell me that he didn't over recruit which led to annual departures. I don't like it; it's a crappy system, but it is what it is in college basketball. ThompsonHoosier, Yogi's Picnic Basket and Stuhoo 3 Quote
MadAboutIndiana Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 It's not that they over recruited a guy. It's that they begged and pleaded for him to skip his senior year of high school to do so. Yogi's Picnic Basket 1 Quote
