Personally, I’ve never selected a new job based on facilities. I picked based on my managers, teammates, success of the company, potential to succeed during my time there, and the opportunities it provided me to learn and grow.

Oh, and compensation, but that’s where this analogy gets controversial.

Seriously though, facilities sure add a nice “wow” factor, but the items I listed above are certainly more important for anyone planning for more than a 9 month stay.

Where I differ with him is:
1. The football program is needed to pay for this stuff or upgrades. He then lists blue bloods and this UK locker room as examples. Yes the $4 million price was covered by UK football. Come on man.
2. The locker room at the arena has to be this elaborate place. Let’s say 30 games per year at 1 hour per game day sitting in that locker room. I would be far more concerned with weight room, practice court, or dorm. The dorms I think could have more of a wow factor.

But honestly $4 million they paid for that is piss in the wind if it was a big deal.

If it is so cheap why haven’t we done it yet? A players lounge and nice locker room are low hanging fruit that should have been picked years ago.

Well, we just finished tens of millions of dollars worth of renovations to keep and improve one of the most historic venues in college basketball, while adding state of the art nutrition and exercise facilities for all student athletes in Memorial Stadium.

Earlier you posted that we didn’t have enough money to replace AH. Can you prove that? Because that sounds like BS to me. In my opinion, this fan base and the boosters have zero interest in tearing down AH.

As I recall back in the 2000s they decided to build a new arena and people lost their **** so we renovated instead.

The overall point is that for a “basketball school” our facilities do not compare to the top programs. And yes, a successful football program that brings in tens of millions more in revenue could have absolutely paid for better basketball facilities.

We have enough obstacles overcoming our recent history and diminished brand. Inferior facilities should not be an additional hurdle.

Literally I pulled that $4 mill figure from an article from the dedication. Not hard to find at all. If it were a big deal it would have been done already. Literally nobody has complained at our locker room. The first time a recruit did I guarantee it would go up within a year.

Didn't they do something a few years back where Greenberg was behind IU's bench and Dakich was behind the other bench?

Good call. Yeah, they had the play-by-play guy in his regular spot and then Dakich and Greenberg were sitting at the scorers table on the last seats next to each bench.

I believe it was for an Illinois game but it's been awhile. I thought it was cool to do for a game but definitely wouldn't want to see that for every game.

I think that is kinda the point some have made. If our sports teams, mainly football, make more money and are wildly profitable without outside donations, the revenue is more valuable because it is controlled and can be done with as the school pleases without outside influence. Under that scenario they have way more power to do as they see

Hmm maybe. I see what you’re saying. But Indiana AD is bringing in more revenue that a few major basketball powerhouses, specifically Kansas, which started this whole conversation another time when we saw a hype video for their new basketball facilities. Check out this link (sorry, couldn’t find 2016-2017 numbers) http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/finances/

Kentucky’s football team isn’t what put them at #13 on that list either.

That’s what should scare you guys though and I don’t think you all understand the revenue cycle of things like that. If you make a $1 in any Corporation you are lucky to get $.05 back for capital planning. So many people get their hands on the money before it would come to the AD. Of that .05 there are about 20 sports programs at IU that get their hands on it. You cannot increase budget for one program without increasing budgets for all. To do that you have to prove the revenue wasn’t a fluke. We are talking less than a couple mill at most due to all of the programs involved. That is why donations are so important.

If our AD operated on a $50 mill budget. Then collectively we bring in $150 if our football team is great. That means we have $100 mill after the $50 is paid. The $100 mill goes through the University first as that is what the athletic revenue is for. More times than not the athletic office pulls in 1/20 of the leftover (not a number pulled out of thin air). That is $5 million. Where do you think bonuses come from? Donations specific to program are then also added. That is why donations are so critical. Trust me when I say additional revenue from football does nothing to the AD other than helps AD and FBHC a bonus and maybe adds a handful of million to be split amongst the budgets for the upcoming seasons if it was a really good year. Revenue and budgeting is not as simplistic as you guys are making it out to be at all lol.
