Basically a slap on the wrist and a "hear me roar" warning. The natty won't be vacated. Has there ever been a NCAAM basketball title vacated?

No but they did it for football. You can't vacate all the wins that led to it but keep the award that would be more of a joke. Like Purdues big ten title.

My take is this. If the big punishment for them is to vacate a title, they're getting off as easy as they could. UL just says "Okay" and goes on conducting business as usual.

A real punishment would be for Pitino to get fired/suspended for a year and losing 3-4 schollies for a few years. That says more than pretending to lose something they played for.

I dunno. Seems like if they vacate the wins the penalties are pretty harsh and then some. From the Rick Bozich article on the penalties:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — In perhaps the harshest penalties ever assigned to a Division I men’s basketball program in the modern era, the University of Louisville must vacate its basketball records from 2010 through 2014 under penalties handed down by the NCAA infractions committee on Thursday in connection to the sex-for-recruits scandal in the men’s basketball program.

Louisville won the 2013 men's basketball title and also appeared in the 2012 NCAA Final Four.

Cardinals’ coach Rick Pitino was given a five-game suspension, to be served during U of L’s first five Atlantic Coast Conference games.  Director of basketball operations Andre McGee, who was found to have arranged the stripper parties in the men’s basketball dorm, was given a ten-year show cause penalty.

The program faces four years of probation going forward, and must vacate the records from the 2010-14 seasons, which could include 123 victories, two Big East Conference Championships, and an American Athletic Conference championship. The school will be ordered to return its financial shares from four NCAA Tournaments.

There will be no further post-season ban or reduction of scholarships.

Louisville took itself out of the Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA Tournaments, even though the Cardinals finished 23-8 and projected as a possible No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament after they finished fourth in the ACC regular season.

Louisville added to the self-imposed penalties by reducing the number of players on scholarship last season from 13 to 11 and by cutting back on the number of recruiting visits and off-campus recruiting trips and contacts by the coaching staff.

Vacating something is like saying "oh yeah, remember those guys playing and winning a NC? Forget that, they were never there." Nobody is going to forget UL won it on the court. So "taking away" a NC is nothing. Everyone knows they earned it through play. The issue is HOW they got those players in the first place. So simply taking it away isn't a punishment at all really.

I disagree. You take the Final Four and Title banner down and essentially that pisses boosters off more than a suspension or a firing. Pitino would never have been able to be proven directly responsible. This is probably the harshest penalty in NCAA basketball in the last 50 years. You don't remember the games as much as the record books after a few years. This is huge.

I guess I just see it differently. I'm not going to magically forget UL won that title because it says vacated, and I would venture to guess a lot of others won't either.

As far as Pitino goes, I think boosters would be more upset with their future team success being in doubt without its title winning coach and loss of scholarships.

You don't have to magically forget it. A team that was ineligible won it. Therefore they don't get to celebrate it. Recruits over the next few years won't remember them winning it. They can't point to that banner. This hits them harder than a 10 game suspension or even a year suspension. There is no precedent for someone not being directly linked to get more than what he did in NCAA basketball. I am surprised they got as much as what they did.

My phone is acting dumb but looks to me like they are already using all 13 for the 2018 season and we're going to need people to leave early.
Their ability to build a winner just took a hit. We should really sell that to Romeo

Absolutely. They can hope a couple of kids leave early but they really got their hands tied with the scholly reduction.

That's fine, and I see your point. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one though
