IU @ Bowling Green Post-Game Thread

Recommended Posts

Our CBs our morons. Never turn their heads and it's a PI everytime. I see improvement from our front 7 in filling gaps, but the tackling went to hell in the second half. There is nothing more for this offense to do. The passing game found its footing and we have one of the best RBs in the country, along with a sturdy line. With the Big10 this bad, the season isn't lost yet, but its going to be tough. Need to win 4 games.

no words. bad loss. offense blew too many chances in the first half, defense too many leads in the second half. not sure you can take anything away from this game other than if coleman stays healthy, he's a first rounder.

Theres a good roster here for Rod Carey to inherit. This was the nail in Wilsons coffin. 3 losses to MAC teams. 2 losses to Navy. Hes not getting it done. Look at Jerry Kill and Minnesota.

Does he have a reputation for fielding good defenses? Because if not, then my concern is we'll still see this crap that we've now witnessed first hand for 4 years.

I don't have much faith left for this coaching staff.  It isn't all negative, I think our talent level has been rising but we continue to field an awful defense and continue to shoot ourselves in the foot.  Untimely penalties, turnovers, etc.  Probably looking at another 5-7 finish.  We really needed to turn some kind of corner this season and I don't see it happening now.  Hope I'm wrong.  I'm not even that angry right now, apathy is setting in big-time.

Special teams didn't help us out much with a couple of terrible punts and missing a very mailable FG. There's either one of two issues here: we are not recruiting B1G caliber players or our coaches are not properly developing our guys. No excuse for how terrible some of those punts and kicks were. No excuse for how bad and lost our corners looked against mid-major receivers. No excuse for how our defensive front couldn't generate a pass rush.

Was there one play on defense where a player did something that stood out on an individual level? I didn't see it. If you're a B1G team playing a MAC team, even if you are getting beat there should be a few plays where pure talent wins out. We saw that on offense with Wynn, Coleman and Sudfeld. Such plays where nowhere to be found on defense which makes me think we have a talent problem as well as a coaching problem. BGSU looked like the more talented, faster, and better recruited team this afternoon.

Sudfield was great.

The talent level is plenty good.

The offensive play calling and execution were quite good.

But our defense is offensive. Will our cornerbacks ever be taught to visually locate the ball before they close? Really, really poorly coached in the fundamentals of the game.

Maybe we just need to throw in the towel and come to the realization that IU isn't going to have a good football team.  Then go hit the tailgate partys and not get upset.....hmmm sounds like a strategy

Eh, I'm always going to hope for bigger, better things. Don't think being at least a semi-consistent bowl team is out of this world expectations

I think it's worse than that. I think a big part of why we kept going for it on fourth down was a lack of trust in our kicker. We gave it up in field goal range too many times in such a close game for it to be coincidence.

We all know Wilson is an offense centric coach, but sometimes I wonder if he isn't so offense oriented that it clouds his view of just how awful the defense is.  That would be a problem.

The offense scored enough points to win most games, the defense is the same dumpster fire it was the last few years.

Not looking to start a Crean bashing thread but I'm generally curious. Why are some of you ok with firing Coach Wilson but not Coach Crean?

Historical powerhouse, give free passes away like Oprah.  Historical doormat, boo this is inexcusable.  What world are you in?  That makes perfect sense.

Less of a buyout.

But, also more on point Crean came in and made serious strides forward with the program. We can all agree that the program is in much much much better shape than when he showed up even with an off year.

Wilson got a team that wasn't good but wasn't a dumpster fire and had a 1 win season. All right, growing pains. But, then just 4 wins. And 5. Now, unless something turns around, maybe another 4. There's just no improvement. If Wilson had gotten us to even the worst Bowl available one year he would be fine right now.

Crean got us to the Sweet Sixteen twice.

Also, people talk about firing Crean all the time. Is it hypocritical to want to get rid of one sport's coach but not another's? They have entirely different histories with their individual programs.

Plus, all the "fire Wilson" talk right now is coming right after a disappointing loss. By Tuesday it will be nearly gone.

I don't really have anything to add to what has already been said.  It's games like today that makes people say nothing is ever going to change with IU football.  It's so frustrating.

I came into this year thinking CKW had us on the right track.  I am trying not to let one game sway my thinking, but this is the kind of game I expect us to win in year four of this regime.  There is no excuse for what happened today.

Even though I didn't post in the season prediction thread, I had us at either 5-7 or 6-6 in my  mind.  Both of those scenarios included a win at BGSU.  This was a horrible loss.  We still have 10 games to go, but I really don't see four more wins on the schedule even with the B1G being historically awful.

The thing that bugs me the most about it all is how I've felt this afternoon.  Normally I would be so mad I couldn't see straight after a loss like that.  I was as calm as could be all afternoon.  It's as if I knew this would happen all along and knew better than to get my hopes up.  After 27 years of following IU football, it's like I have finally reached the point of being so beat down that I give in, and I hate that.

I was at my in-laws and finally got the game turned on...just in time to see Coleman fumble. And then to see our defense not actually come onto the field for the last two drives. When I got home the first thing I did was delete the recording of the game from my dvr.

When BGSU scored the last touchdown my non-football fan mother-in-law told me that at least we kept it close. I had to calmly explain that there is no reason for us to ever lose to a MAC school. She asked if we had lost to MAC schools before and I had to admit that we had...routinely. She asked If I was sure that my we shouldn't lose to MAC schools and it became harder to explain.

This was a bad day.
