Mike Davis returns to Assembly Hall

Recommended Posts

I think he'll get more cheers than boos, but nothing crazy either way. From what I can remember from his days, I have no reason to boo him. He took us to a title game, that's what I remember.

While he did take us to a title game he had players recruited by Knight.

At that point, RMK had not advanced past the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament since 1994.  Does that mean I think Mike Davis did some amazing coaching job to get that team that far?  No.  But I think those kids were highly motivated to prove a point.  I mean they basically threatened to transfer if Mike did not get the job.  So you are talking about a team that WANTED to play for the new coach and I think the whole fiasco added a bit more motivation in some manner.

I would definitely cheer Coach Davis. While i'm not a Davis apologist, I would cheer him just for the sheer joy of that 2002 team alone. People forget that year we won the Maui Invitational against a good Gonzaga team. We won the Big Ten, not outright, but we still won it. We got to the finals of the Big Ten Championship, and it took a buzzer beater by former Hoosier Luke Recker to beat us, we came back from 17 down to beat Duke at Rupp Arena, we avenged our loss against Kent St. the year before in the tourney with a record amount of 3 pointers made, we beat maybe the best team Kelvin Sampson had at Oklahoma in the Final 4. Oh so many memeories

So because of what I mentioned above, I would applaud for Mike Davis. I can understand how some people will feel otherwise. After that magical run, it got worse and worse each year and his teams became painful to watch. The dreaded 4 guard lineups, the lack of movement on offense, the lackluster recruiting classes, the inability to bring in any big man, the question every year by the fanbase if this was his last year, his awful public speaking abilities, the constant changing of assistant coaches, the lack of any Indiana High School talent on the roster because he could not recruit this state. These are all things that make it difficult to look fondly on Mike Davis' tenure while at IU, but for the 2002 run alone, I would give him an applause. He always struck me as a nice Christian man, who was just simply over his head. And like others have mentioned, the IU staff and Athletic Dept could not have made bigger bonehead decisions during the era of 2000-2006.

I would cheer him too. Although I did not agree with many things he did----he did bring us DJ White who was/is one of my all time favorite Hoosiers.  I will also never forget that title game tourney run. He let the boys turn it loose from 3---something I hope we see a lot of this year!

I spent some time at one of his practices and he was a nice guy. The 2002 NCAA run was great. If Coverdale wasn't hurt with that ankle, which was black, I believe IU beats Maryland. However, you have to win at IU (Men's Basketball) to keep your job, no matter who you are.

We would've been better with a healthy Coverdale, but I doubt we beat Maryland that night. We could have beat anyone else though. . I do firmly believe we would have won it all the year Alan Henderson went down.

That 2002 team run was very surreal.  It was all heart and determination.  Moye, Coverdale, etc.

They played loose, had a chip on their shoulder, and had nothing to lose.  Coaching though???

No offense to Davis, but the Kentucky episode was really embarrassing when he ran on the court.

Welcome back Davis!  Now accept defeat :)

The author has Texas Southern winning the SWAC like they did last year and playing a "Dayton game".

In all fairness...there ARE (or at least were) a lot of racist Indiana fans. Not a majority or anything like that, but when Davis was here, I know for a fact there were people not on board because of his race.

I'm sure there are still quite a few people in this country that have racist views, unfortunately.

Personally, I couldn't care less about his skin color.  I wasn't on board because he couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag.

Mike Davis lost so many games that he set records for losses at Indiana.  He blamed the fans.  Then he blamed the fans again.

I'm sorry, that's terrible.  I have no respect for that "man".
