Kenny Johnson to Louisville

Recommended Posts

Its already the beginning of the end. Why do you think we are having recruiting problems and can't give them away? These recruits are a lot smarter than many on here think.

You might be right on that.  Still, I don't think you can blame it on Coach Johnson.

I get where you are going and I understand why you ask. I don't mind people to better themselves in any way. As a matter of fact, if you aren't looking at ways to improve yourself then I have a hard time understanding why. You bring up a very valid point. However, have you ever been in a position trying to improve yourself but you oversell your actual skill? I try to make myself better every moment of every day, but I don't try to say I am capable of flying to the moon when I outright can't. Can he become a good coach? Absolutely! Coming into Indiana from Towson was a HUGE jump for him and I honestly think he let the culture influence him to a point where he "had" to sell himself being not only a good recruiter but a good coach as well. Good coaches don't shout down the head coach. Good coaches don't overstep their role. Good coaches don't make it a point to be the first to chew a kid out BEFORE the head coach has said his piece to him. Good coaches teach first, then yell. Johnson is not a good coach. Watch any game...any game at all this past season and watch how Johnson conducts himself. I mean at points through the season, I wasn't sure exactly who the head coach might have been. At some times, Johnson was half way onto the floor yelling at the kids. As an assistant coach/recruiter, I have no idea how these things are considered good habits. I mean, if there are multiple messages coming from the staff throughout the whole game, you have mass confusion. Mass confusion leads to defensive breakdowns and turnovers...any of that sound familiar this year? Johnson can become a good coach. Its all up to him. To this point, I am not impressed with him as a coach. Learn, then teach. 2 years doesn't make anybody an expert in anything. Just don't conduct yourself as if you were. Good question...and I removed any personal slight (intentional or otherwise) from it. I doubt I change many minds, but its my opinion...take it or leave it. I do honestly hope that Johnson makes a total fool out of me and becomes exactly what this program needs to rebound, but I don't think that will happen.

I will leave the topic of Kenny Johnson. You guys know how I feel about it. I know how you feel about it. Lets agree to disagree about him and move on. I do mean it when I say I hope you guys are right and I am a fool.

I completely understand where you are coming from.  I just wanted to ask to humanize this discussion.  He is no different than you and I.  He just holds more relevance in his position.  I can see why he would do what he is doing.  He can improve his in game (although I do not know if he is good or bad) by being with the coaches he is with.

What's more important, someone who can recruit good players to IU, or someone who can actually coach up the kids?

I think he can coach.  I think he can game plan.  I think his biggest fault is trusting specific players until it is too late.  He puts so much into them he cannot fathom they can fail.  So, he is late to adjust a lot.  That is why I truly feel that way.  He is just too trusting.  His system is player decision based.  I don't like that, but it is what it is.  He does not run a mechanical system.  I prefer and grew up with a mechanical type system.  You would teach your players what to do within the system.  The old adage works here imo.  You don't let the prisoners run the asylum because they won't always make the right decision.

Indy Star says Louisville is after him too and IU is prepared to pay him more.

Hopefully he stays.  He is getting a type of player I like.  I know everyone is excited to see what Blackmon brings next season as am I.  Robert Johnson is going to be fun to watch.  Add those to who else he has brought in and I think he has done a fantastic job.  I can also see why he would want to capitalize on his situation now with the uncertainty of next season.  Hopefully this plays out well for us.

Thx for the article. Great read. Aside from naming Troy as Tory. I'd be shocked if he's on IUs payroll next season. He's being courted pretty heavily. And you know what, good for him. He's earned it. While it might not be pleasant for us in the interim I would only wish him the best.

If Indiana is willing to pony up which they are, then If he leaves to be an assistant... Not good on IU in my opinion. Head coach sure, assistant??

Depends on how much IU will put up vs how much UM/UL will pay. Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see him go to Maryland just because it's home. I would leave a school for my alma mater/home state school for a minor raise too. Even if it wasn't the better program.

I don't think this decision can be made solely on money. Relationships in his personal life, professional networking, individual and family preferences all play a role IMO. I do think though for some reason that we will hold on to him Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
