Who would you hire to replace CTC?

This scenario would likely play out as my choice of Stevens or Donvan would be very unlikely. I believe my second tier was Hoiberg or Marshall and here is where an ex player should be considered. I'm not sure who would be the best choice but you would have many. Alford, Woodson, Wittman, Fife, and Cheaney just to start but talk to them all. They know the culture of winning, of Indiana basketball from high schools to pro, and also the relationships from past and present players to get the job done. We have tried the others except this one(sorry Dakich doesn't count), so why not? It may work and at what risk? Very little imo.[/quote]

I agree with you on this. I probably saw, but didn't remember your original list of guys. I see nothing wrong with an IU guy if we can't get one of those preferred coaches you listed. Just as long as we aren't settling simply because he is an IU alum.

I'm not against an IU guy, but I don't think we should just hire one because it worked somewhere else.

I think Ollie winning in it all nixes the argument that a coach with no prior experience shouldn't get a high caliber job but and this is a huge but I think this case is rare and you hire at your own risk.

For the record, I don't want him nor do I think the idea would get any entertainment... just admiring while I watch the women's college basketball championship, but I would have liked to see Geno Auriemma coach a mens team. Uconn is so dominant with him.

You may be on to something with Geno and I wonder if he got an interview for the men's job. He may be at a place in his career where there is nothing left to prove at the women's game and is interested in a mens program. I would definately give him a good look if he was interested. We have done much worse with the 3 hires we have made since 1999. He is definately a great coach which should translate to any gender.

I think that's the first time I've ever heard Geno mentioned for a men's job. I'm open to the idea, but wonder if switching from the women's to men's game would be tough after having been there and been so successful. Everything from personalities to gameplans is completely different. That being said, I hope it happens somewhere.

If we go for an ex-IU guy, my choice would be Alford. I'd like to see him bring Ed Schilling ( the former Park Tudor coach ) with him.

I agree with this.  Remember Crean's press conference? "It's Indiana."  We all thought he understood it, but years later he doesn't have his house in order? With a guy like Alford you already know he understands it.  I think the fan base would allow him the same early leeway (depending on what he would inherit) based on that fact alone.  Plus, I think a younger ex-player coach would require less money (maybe more obvious) and possibly shorter contract.  Also, a guy like Alford would understand what is expected.

One interesting thing that I haven't heard brought up re: ex players, is whether we'll ever see a ex players turned NBA front office make the jump to AD.  This could happen a lot now and I just don't know.

Ollie did a great job, but I want to see how he does going forward.  You could make the argument he inherited his team.

I have recently thought the same thing about those players were Calhouns guy, kinda like what happened to us when Mike Davis and the guys went to the national championship and lost to Maryland, those were Bob Knight players and it all proved so shortly after as he year after year buried his face is his hands on the bench....

You may be correct but I know someone who has talked with Brad and they would not be surprised to see him return to college. He enjoys coaching players more at the college level.

NBA coaches get more time off in the summer, he believes, and he wants to see if that helps offset some of the drawbacks.

I agree that he is unlikely to return this year but if his enjoyment of NBA coaching does not increase I could see it happening before his 3rd year.
