Who would you hire to replace CTC?

Recommended Posts

Guys, being new to Indiana I still have a lot to learn about the workings of the University. I know there was talk of boosters wanting to buy out Crean this year... is it realistic to think people would pony up that type of cash? Or was that just exaggeration?

Our next hire, IMO, can't be one of an up-and-comer. I want a proven winner. Brad Stevens or Sean Miller, someone who builds good teams that have gone deep in the tournament

We could add the following to the list, any one of which would be an improvement over CTC:

1.) Martha the mop lady, who's State Farm commercials are classics. Yeah, she'd be an improvement

2.) Sammy Terry. Yeah, he's dead, but so what? He'd be an improvement

3.) Gene Keady. Granted, it'd make most IU enthusiasts vomit, but hey, they're already sick from watching the product these days.

4.) Rosie O'Donnell. Well, she's probably less creepy than CTC, plus she probably knows her way around a locker room or two.

5.) Ron Jeremy. Anyone who can make that much money, looking that bad, in that industry, has to know something about winning.

6.) Helen Keller. Dead or alive, deaf, blind and mute, she still probably knows more about basketball and how to beat a 2-3 zone.

7.) Charles Lockett, Warden at Terre Haute's Federal Pen. I don't know if he knows basketball, but I bet the boys don't leave.

8.) Bozo T. Clown: Admit it, it'd be funny as hell, and we already have the circus in place

9.) Jay Edwards. A failed NBA career and a "meh" career in autos since. Perhaps he could use that to our advantage.

10.) Fred Glass. Hey, he made the mess, he can clean it up.

I'm really reaching here but I was sitting around thinking about what Kevin Ollie has just done with Uconn. And I thought of a name that obviously isn't rumored or probably not even mentioned anywhere. And I'm not even saying it would be a good or a bad hire, but how about a guy who has been an assistant for quite some time on the NBA level. A big man so he could teach post skills. Not sure if he would ever be interested since there isn't any ties, but we don't always need to look for an "IU Guy" but the guy I'm thinking of is Patrick Ewing. What would anybody think of him as a coach at the college level? Please don't criticize me more just throwing a name out there to see what people would think

UConn hires an ex player and comes off a tournament ban to win it all. The right hire came from their university yet a lot on here say we need to hire the opposite. UConn has 4 titles since 1999 and we are still talking about the "right coach" during the same time period. I stand by my earlier analysis of finding the right coach, and my only change in that would be an ex IU player be in the final mix. UConn did it absolutely right.

So since Ollie just happened to work out, an ex-IU guy would obviously work out for us? I'd like to see how often that actually happens. I'm not against an IU guy, but I don't think we should just hire one because it worked somewhere else.

Yeah, I'm right there with you. I'm cool with considering an ex-IU player, but we shouldn't be acting like this is exactly common place for them to come in and do what Ollie just accomplished. Also, don't think they should get bonus points for being ex-IU players, like some of our fans seem to want to do as well

If there was a mind-blowingly obvious hire out there that played at IU, I would be on board. I just don't see that guy right now, so there's no reason to limit ourselves to an unproven coach (Fife, Cheaney, Woodson in college). If the time comes that Crean is gone, I just want the best guy for the job regardless of where he went.

Had a chance to sit with someone down here at the FF that shared some interesting info. Not earth shattering but interesting.

I did not realize this person had a direct connection/friendship with Brad Stevens until the last 10 mins our so of our conversation otherwise I probably would have focused on that more. As it is we talked work for 90% of the time and only shifted to hoops at the end.

When I mentioned I had been to Butlers two championship games they mentioned, as if I knew, that they had visited with Brad a few weeks back. Again nothing earth shattering other than to share that Brad told them that the NBA was nothing like being a college coach. He specifically mentioned how the NBA player is not coachable like the college kid. There was also some discussion on power of the athlete vs the coach.

I was expecting them to then say he is ready to come back to college but I think there are a couple of things that will keep at least another year. One is that he appreciates the contract length he has and I got the idea that his competitive nature would keep him from jumping now. Interestingly though that same competitive nature may lead to a jump if they continue to struggle and he does not feel he can have as big an impact as in college. The second item is there is a benefit is that during the summers he thinks NBA coaches will have more family time than college coaches. I think he will want to play that out and see if that is the case.

Stevens is about the only one right now I would consider over Crean. Crean is likely back next year and will likely right the ship enough to get another year or two. If however we struggle next year it is not unreasonable to assume Stevens would be interested.

I stated my top candidates wouldn't be an IU alum/player, but what if you can't get any of them? This scenario would likely play out as my choice of Stevens or Donvan would be very unlikely. I believe my second tier was Hoiberg or Marshall and here is where an ex player should be considered. I'm not sure who would be the best choice but you would have many. Alford, Woodson, Wittman, Fife, and Cheaney just to start but talk to them all. They know the culture of winning, of Indiana basketball from high schools to pro, and also the relationships from past and present players to get the job done. We have tried the others except this one(sorry Dakich doesn't count), so why not? It may work and at what risk? Very little imo.
