Oh, I am pretty sure the whiny child is the one who needs to ban mean ole words, not me...I was ridiculing the weakness of anyone offended by an actual medical term that has been around for hundreds of years to describe everything from physical disabilities to mental disabilities...Hey, I didn't write the dictionary, I just quote it...unlike others...but if I am banned, I am banned...I usually only read the recruiting boards anyway with little posting....seems to be a little less "touchy" on that board, imo...that is if I am allowed to have that opinion...let me check the rules...
The way it was used is not as a medical term. If you cannot understand that or why it offends people, then you never will. If you want banned that bad, then why come here? If you feel this is touchy, then you might as well not come here. You may as well go to the board you prefer. We will prefer it too if this is too hard to understand. That will never change. Beyond that, how is that us telling you are not allowed to have an opinion? You might want to check the rules. Again, you are a guest in our free house. Please feel free to act like it at any time.

I used to use this word casually with friends until I met a girl who had a brother with Downs Syndrome. Haven't said it since. The term is dated much like many words used to describe people of different colors or religions in this country.

^^^And there you have it^^

Short, to the point, spot on.

It's great you have an opinion, but rules are rules & without members like me you would be keeping those opinions to yourself instead of expressing them freely on this site. You are welcome.

It has something to do with you coming off like you're better than everyone else. Sorry but moving, college courses and getting in to the fire academy are much higher on my list of things to spend money on. You know why you can spend your money? Guys at any point in time that have served so you can even earn your money in the first place. You are welcome. See I can be arrogant too. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

I would say 70 percent of people use that word daily but it is one of those words that can strike a nerve with the wrong person in this case it has rules r rules dont see whats so hard to understand.

I am 33 years old and when I went through middle school and high school that word was used as slang to describe anything that you didn't like or didnt make sense to you. It held little weight to those using it at that time as slang. However, as an adult with a social and proper education it is easy to understand that this word is better not used in a derogatory sense. So I do understand the dichotomy of meanings from different perspectives. To each their own, but I personally try not to use that word out of respect for others.

Not the time and place for this argument man. Just let it go. We would have all forgotten about it by now
Also, having served in the Navy before attending IU, one of the least classy things to do for someone who is in the Military is to brag about it. We had kids who would brag all day to Police, bar owners, and anyone in authority about being in the military. Basically to say they were better and that no one had authority over them. That drives me nuts. Those guys never were in harms way except for a few bad storms we got in in the Indian Ocean. People give the respect you earn, not the respect you think you deserve. Plus, it really gives a bad name to guys who did time on the ground in Afghanistan or Iraq and don't go around tooting their own horn. You're puffing your chest on a message board. I would hope your CO taught you better.
Not in any way was it intended to be bragging. And no where did I say I was better than him. That's not me or who I am. It was intended to show someone who brags about giving money why he's allowed to do those things. The you're welcome comment was a childish response to his you're welcome. Should I have added it? probably not but hindsight is always 20/20. If you read my post you'd probably see it was intended as a smarta$$ response to someone acting like they were authority because they pony up money to a site. I'm in no way "puffing my chest out" if that's the case isn't that the exact thing you just did by stating you were in the military and how you view things? Ask anyone that knows me and you'd find that I don't live off things I've done in the past. I'm no better than the guy working the cash register at McDonald's so I will definitely not allow an individual to act better than me because of his money. You're equal in my eyes until you do something that changes that. If that's the way you seen it then that sucks but I won't apologize for what I posted. I respect your words and appreciate your service brother. I just got the vibe you were touting your Militry service like it hels weight on this board. That could have been my mistake. Glad you're working towards a degree. Best of luck to you. Non sibi sed Patriae.

I appreciate yours as well. I've always been against the bragging about serving but I do understand where you came from with it. The tone of my post likely didn't help. It wasn't my intent but I'm glad you spoke up about it. That's not something I ever want to do. No harm no foul man I appreciate the reply.

I appreciate that very much and my best to you too. That phrase couldn't be any more true.

It seemed like it was a pretty civil discussion on his end.

I agree that it isn't a word that shouldn't be used, but I would never let someone else's views upset me so much. It is like when people let jokes upset them... they are JOKES, and if they upset you then you are weak.

Just because his views aren't the same as yours, doesn't make him wrong and it sure doesn't make him "uncivil".
