Might take him a little bit to get acclimated, but if we're going to make a serious run in March we'll need a player like Thon. It's a risk worth taking.

I agree with both sides of the Thon debate. I'm not sure where I am yet. I wouldn't mind him because he really doesn't seem like a trouble maker and he obviously is a good player. But at the same time, just adding a guy mid-year seems trouble in itself. I really don't know.

Didn't someone do this for the University of Tennessee a few years back? I can't recall who it was or how they did. Anyone have information on this one? Obviously all situations are different but it could provide an interesting comparison...

I believe it was Jarnell (sp?) Stokes from UT. He graduated high school early and joined. I can't remember how well he did but I think conditioning was an issue.

Yeah I just don't see him going pro after his freshman year.  Hes got tons of potential but right now its totally untapped.  He'll end up rotting in the D league I feel if he goes after just a half year.

The only 5* I can remember joining mid season was Bill Walker. He graduated in the fall and started at Kansas State that December under Bob Huggins. I think he was part of the OJ Mayo/Rose/Gordon class.

He stayed for 2.5 years at UT and was ranked 11th in the 2011 class. Drafted 35th.

Here's another tidbit on "mid year" from ITH. It seems that "mid year" does not equal "mid season" per his handler.

 

“It’s shaping up like it’s going to be mid-year,” Smith told Scout. “It’s looking more and more like it’ll be that. He has his core done. That’ll be done on June 23. He’s fine in his core. It’s just getting the work done. For our sake we are going step by step to see what makes sense for him. If we can get a mid-year situation that’s good for him and he can walk in then we’ll go with a mid-year situation.”

Coaches from Oregon and Indiana were in Canada to see Jamal Murray and Thon Maker, respectively, yesterday. Both could be moving to 2015.
