(2015) C Daniel Giddens to OSU

Recommended Posts

Any idea which big man we have the best shot at landing in 2015? It all seems so quiet.

Sure don't. Things couldn't look worse. At least Alex Illikainen and Raymond Spalding made it on campus. Supposedly we aren't recruiting Illkainen any more and I haven't seen anything on Spalding.

I hate watching every game for the last 2 years and hearing everyone and their brother telling us how we should feed the post. IU wouldn't get a visit from me. Period.

Oh wait no more eligibility for Craft.

Yeah, if I was a talented big there is no way in the world I would play here.

Well, it's not exactly looking good anyway.

The good thing for us is that you are not a talented big man and probably never got close.

The other good thing for us is that for the second year in a row a talented big man will be drafted in the top 10 of NBA draft higher than he was expected to when he came to Bloomington.

Let's see how 2015 and 2016 shake out here. Still have some talented guys on the board. Hope we can land a couple of them. Until we turn it around I hope you enjoy this time where you can go on any thread and take a worthless dig at the program.

The obvious is not lost upon me simply because I chose to remain optimistic and lighthearted. But thank you, again, for ensuring no one ever loses sight of the dark clouds over Assembly Hall blocking all the sunshine.

I call it how I see it and things don't look good right now and haven't for awhile. Hopefully that can change, but I think there is a bit more work to do then some of you realize. We are having a hard time filling 2 rides for '14 and we are behind in '15.

We might have to bring you in. What's your specialty?

My specialty would provide no relief to our problems as a basketball program. Haha

I just cant believe how hard we have fallen since the loss to Syracuse in the tourney. We go to being number 1 in the country for the majority of the year to a disapointing loss in the sweet 16, then barely going above .500 last year and now we cant even give away schollies in the 2014 and 2015 classes.

It's just kind of unbelievable. Coach Crean had better get the program back....and it would probably be a real good idea if be did it SOON.

I can't look down on "project players". The good ones create chemistry in the team, I respect them more than the one and done's that play with $$'s in their eyes. The 3 or 4 year starters are the bread and butter of our tradition.

Yup.

That's the narrative to recruit against IU alright.

Not sure it's true, though.

If I were a coach and recruiting big men against IU, I'd probably say something along the lines of:

"Indiana had a big man go fourth in the 2013 draft and will likely have another big man be a top 8 pick in the 2014 draft. Cool, right? But just imagine how much higher the two players would've gone had the Hoosiers fed the post. Don't end up like those guys. Don't let Tommy hold you back. Come to my school."

There's more to a big man, his recruitment, and his development than simply feeding the post. I agree it's a rather big problem of our offense, but if a tall kid won't choose IU merely because he may not get as many touches as he would like, it might be best for both parties to go their separate ways.

This is an issue that will be eased with winning, and exponentiated with losing. It is a problem (and right now it's a very big problem), but I think we're looking at it too one-dimensionally.

I feel a lot of cognitive dissonance on the big man development issue at IU.  I think our blue chip bigs have done just fine for themselves in terms of draft status.  I don't feel like Crean's usage of these two guys has done any injury to them in the NBA draft.  Where I think the usage hurts is on our own team in Bloomington.  I think we could have made better use of both young men to the benefit of our own team.

What I get more concerned about is it seems be all or nothing with bigs at IU.  Either we get a blue chip kid or we get a lower rated kid.  And while the blue chips do what blue chips do, the lesser rated kids don't seem to develop too much.  Or in some cases, just bust out completely for various reasons.  From Bawa to GMM to Jurkin...it almost seems like we do better with walk-on bigs than anything, if you take the blue chips out of the equation.  Yes I'm sure I am overlooking somebody.  And I do think Hanner can play.  But...if Jeff Howard could get a NCAA waiver on eligibility then I think he would play MORE minutes this coming season as compared to last season.  And that really worries me.
