I'm sure that is just a coincidence though. They definitely lost a competitive advantage. Quote

Demo Posted October 21 Posted October 21 UConn beats Mich St by 8 at Breslin without Mullins. UConn is, unsurprisingly, clearly really good. MSU looks like another one of those Izzo teams where, sure, they’re gonna be good but they’re not always gonna score it real well. Despite having a lot of their perimeters kids back when Fears didn’t have the ball in his hands they weren’t getting much done at all. Home Jersey 1 Quote

I think Illinois and MSU are the obvious top 2 in the B10 this year, but I will say, I don't think we will look overmatched against MSU with this team. Demo 1 Quote

They did a terrific job with that event. And I’d be perfectly comfortable playing that team. Unless Scott is on I don’t see where their actual shotmaking comes from unless Jervis is ready to be that as a frosh and that seems like asking a lot. But they do have a bunch of depth and they could grind teams down, Home Jersey 1 Quote
Pagoda Posted October 21 Posted October 21 Big analysis on roster spend. Very good info in here. We aren’t the top, but we are close to top-10. Also, there aren’t 20-25 teams spending $20M+ like some coaches claim. Lastly, Purdue sure is on a budget — $7-10M range?! Hardwood83 and str8baller 2 Quote

They claim the B1G average is dragged down by the bottom third, but I still find something off about the B1G trailing the SEC in money for basketball, but ostensibly our top teams seem to be out doing them in football. Maybe the inversion of basketball-football dynamics at Florida and IU explain it. I don’t know. Quote

From the article: The trickiest part of a project like this: an understandable motivation for some people to lie about their school's actual number. We are not the IRS, so there's only so much we can do to corroborate the information. In an effort to get the clearest picture possible of which schools are spending how much, CBS Sports' sourcing is based on conversations (and longstanding relationships) with head coaches, assistants, athletic directors, general managers, agents and even some third-party consultants who have access to teams' NIL contracts. In some instances, sources provided a team's spending ledger under the agreement that documents and/or screenshots would not be shared to anyone else. FWIW Pagoda 1 Quote
Home Jersey Posted October 21 Posted October 21 Couldn't care less about the specific figures as long as we spend enough to be competitive, which we clearly do. After a certain point the excessive spending is just wasteful if the coaching isn't up to par. DChoosier 1 Quote

I think it’s directionally right and providing ranges was wise. Same approach Stew Mandel took when he did CFB roster cost. Matt did a nice job and a-hole Jeff is coping. Classic. DUH Sad to say I doubt Assembly Hall would've had close to the same environment as Breslin last night. Probably makes more sense financially for these games to be neutral site, but I agree it would be nice for more of them to be played on campus at least occasionally. IU students are probably nowhere near as excited about basketball as MSU students, currently. And the way their student section is across much of the lower bowl just creates an awesome environment. Puts IU 10-15 range which maps. Interesting that us and UNC are the highest paid teams not to be preseason 25. We surely aren’t getting the “Duke discount”, the the “Retention is much cheaper” argument doesn’t fully hold up either. Players are getting market value and certain players are more concerned with the money than the other stuff. Purdue clearly recruits in a way to avoid that obstacle as much as possible in this era. Them retaining their roster last year was some sort of a miracle. Based on early return I feel a lot better than UNC fans are feeling for comparison sake. It’s big business and I hope our staff and GM can be smart and navigate this thing. I’d love to be top 5 of course and if results start flowing our budget might match but 10-15 should be enough if spending properly to be right there. Quote
RaceToTheTop Posted October 21 Posted October 21 Looked up Steven Reynolds on 247 as I always wondered what happened to him (he was a recruit in the class of 2026). As a sophomore at one time he was rated by 247 as the 38th best player in the class and had offers from 9 Big Ten schools including IU, Purdue, Michigan, Michigan State, and Illinois. It was assumed that he would end up at Purdue (at the time, his sister was a freshman playing at Purdue). Fast forward, his sister transferred to Texas Arlington and the family moved to Arlington where Steven played his senior season. Steven's ranking dropped (247 lists him as the #192 recruit in the class of 2026) and he committed to California Baptist. Not sure what happened. I saw him put up 50 points in a game as a junior and it looked effortless. Demo 1 Quote

"The former All-Big Ten forward from Purdue is one of three Kansas players trying to gain eligibility through the courts" That seems like a big gamble. If they lose, gonna be a long season in Lawrence. Quote

I suppose we’ll know more accurately next portal season when we see who stays, but I don’t think there’s much doubt they paid above market on most if not all these kids to sign them to multiyear deals. Last portal cycle 5 in 5 wasn’t locked down yet and the only kid under the old model with 1 year left would have been Lindsay. Everyone else had 2, now 3, and I’m sure buying them out of retesting the market again in April was expensive. And I’m 100% down with that plan. Whether that was DDV or Carr or a mutually conceived plan, bravo. Quote
