You also had people tell you to embrace the grind and that it might not happen overnight.    IU is going to have to grind to get back to where the fans want IU to be.

Probably, but when the program has been grinding since the Obama administration and isn’t in any better of a spot, the fan reaction is going to become “see ya until you figure it out.” The biggest crowd in Assembly Hall this season is going to be to watch a football game…

It will be the Purdue game or at least the Purdue game will be equal.

That’s fine and if the fans don’t want to come back until then then there their choice.  That doesn’t mean it’s not going to be a grind.   I’ve said this for years if you don’t like the project then cut bait and move on and do other stuff.  Last year I cut bait early in the season because I was over the coach  and watched the rest of college basketball even more then I do.   It sucked not watching IU but I had a tipping point.   I have no problem with giving DeVries some time however as you said it’s been a grind for a long time so I can see why some don’t want to grind.   He will either win enough games to bring people back to watching them or he won’t and we do this again down the road

So you're going to lose by 20 points.  You have a big man project on the bench.  Why the hell not put him in and see?  Zero to lose at that point. IMO that is bad coaching.

Why don’t we put him in?

because he’s getting trucked in practice every day by Sam Alexis and Reid Bailey.

For me, the largest part is the fatigue that all of this has brought on. Like the Cubs fans, I start each season believing that we're about to make a statement with the upcoming season. But as time passes, the ability to stomach some of the really bad play, head-scratching decisions, etc, grows less and less.

It started with Crean, who got 8 years. To be honest, I was over him around year 6 or 7. Then came Archie. He got 4 years, but it was clear after a couple that he was not the answer. I was never really into Woodson, but despite efforts to prop him up with donors' NIL money, I hoped. After watching Woodson coach, it was clear that he had no clue.

This season, we turn the page to DeVries. I was on board with the hire, and really thought that he could buy/build a team. I guess 16 games into the season is still a bit early to call it, and I'm willing to give him another season or two. But I am absolutely not impressed so far. I get that his roster was primarily built to match his coaching style, but it just doesn't work in the B1G with the monster front court players in the league. And if the threes aren't falling, it's game over, as we have no option to play differently.

So here we are. Wishing and hoping that we can be competitive, but at this point it's a pipe dream. And at 72, I've better ways to spend my remaining time on this big, blue marble. I will probably still watch if I remember that there's a game, but I am nowhere nearly as invested in Indiana basketball as I used to be. It hurts. But it hurts less if I don't watch.

How bad to you have to be to get "trucked in practice every day" by Reid Bailey? THAT speaks volumes about where we are.

Put in the guy that hasn't been able to beat out Reed Bailey. That's a bold strategy, cotton.

There's losing by 20 and there's losing by 35+.

Getting your clock cleaned on the wrong end of a 19-0 run at Breslin isn't the best scenario for a project player becoming less of a project.

Nobody really knows what happens in practice.  But Reed ain't getting it done -- not even close.  May as well throw caution to the wind.  At least the kid has 5 fouls to give.  :)

Probably pretty bad. But he's a freshman that has zero strength and never played defense previously. Bailey is not good, but he's way better than that.

At this point an a$$ kicking is and a$$kicking.  Throwing other players out there is a no lose situation.  If they suck, then we still suck.  All we are talking about is degree of suckage.  :)

The coaches know what happens in practice and clearly feel Bailey is a better option.

Why didn’t Cignetti have to grind?

I want to see what DDV does this offseason after getting punched in the mouth this season. Then I will probably make judgement.

Same.

But the thing I can’t get out of my head is that he had the scout on his son and Enright more than anybody. He’s coached both for 2+ years. Can’t blame that on the assistants. And he thought they were B1G caliber starters?

Our best player is Wilkerson and he isn’t anything but an average athlete at the B1G level. He got mauled last night and really can’t get his own shot against athletic defenders.  Conerway is similar.  Like how do you basically recruit a below average athlete at every single spot? Seems like just by random luck you’d have a couple guys who translate over better than that.

We all want Devries to be successful this offseason but it seems like he will have to abandon every single principle he used to build this team.  That is a tough spot to be in.

Was it Woody's third year that we all wanted to rip our eyeballs out because of the obvious poor roster construction? That was especially bad because he is a terrible coach.

Shaheen Holloway won 7 games last year and they're currently in the top 25 coming off a close loss to UConn. The Jimmy's and the Joe's matter like the X's and O's do. And they're not nearly as well resourced as Indiana.

Would I have liked a better team in year 1? Sure. Am I going to extrapolate poor roster construction to an existential question on the state of IUBB and DDV? Nope, not til it becomes a trend here. There are things I like and things I don't like so much about his offense / defense / in game decisions.

Obvious scouting misses on this team from a staff that wasn't ready from the start. That is on DDV but sometimes **** happens and doesn't go how you expect. Tough spot for year 1 but very different situation heading into year 2.

If people don't enjoy the building process, nobody is forcing them to tune in. You can always check back in if / when they start winning. But beating the guy up after 16 games and hammering the same talking points is the type of thing opposing fans do, not people who are genuinely rooting for a team to overcome adversity. If the past 10-25 years of IUBB have been too terrible, release yourselves from that obligation lol.

It’s been done before.  Underwood at Illinois when he first got in the B1G stuck with his overplaying defense that worked at the lower level and then got humbled in his first 2 years at Illinois which i think are the 2 of the worst seasons in Illinois basketball history.   He talked about swallowing his pride and building a better roster that made sense for the B1G ( went and recruited Cockburn).   He has it rolling now
