Hypothetical Portal Changes

Recommended Posts

Curious..what changes would you like to see regarding the transfer portal? For me..and some of these may not be reasonable.

1) Portal opens one week after the National Title game. Most summer classes begin in early June. Players would have plenty of time to pick their school.

2) You must stay at your original school for two years (Fr. and So..includes redshirt).

3) You get a one time transfer without having to sit out. If you transfer a second time, you must sit out a year.

4) You get 5 years to play 4. A redshirt season means you miss more than 50% of your games that year.

5) Only exceptions to 2 and 3...your Head Coach leaves or you have to transfer close to home due to circumstances.  EX: It can't be a kid from Indy who wants to transfer to Auburn from a west coast school.

6) I think in the IHSAA if you turn 20 years old during the season you are ineligible. I think in the NCAA if you turn 25 maybe 26 during the season, you are no longer eligible. I don't think it's a good thing to see 25/26 year olds playing college sports. It REALLY hurts incoming Freshman. I've heard this from several families with potential D1 athletes.

Change needs to happen. I have zero issue with players transferring/making money. But it is out of control.

The only likely item changing anytime soon will be when the portal opens up for MBB and WBB. We could see a shift after the national championship.

I agree. I don't see the others. Just makes sense. It's out of control. It will kill Mid-Majors and hurt potential players in the future.

What we're look at is the mid/low majors turning into a development league for the P4's. Kids who average 14PPG and more on the mid-major level will enter the portal every year, looking for the top dollar.

However, I think this could help mid-majors in a way as P4's recruit less HS kids.

#2 isn't necessary if you have #3. Would anyone be that sad to see Bryson Tucker leave? Would you want him around a second season if he is unhappy?

I would like to see some NIL attached to retention. Like 60% paid in season and a lump 40% if you are the next season roster.

(1) Portal doesn’t open until after the National Championship. It’s crazy to force coaches to deal with the portal when their season is still happening.

(2) you sit out a season unless you’re a grad transfer or your head coach leaves. People make the argument “but coaches can leave whenever they want!” First off, players and coaches are different. Coaches have contracts with financial implications if they leave. Players right now can really do whatever they want. It needs to be reigned in.

Matt Painter is on that comitee and that comitee changed it from Mid April until now on purpose to not interfere with high school recruiting and to make sure coaches can have a break before sumner.

He explained this on an interview just this week?

Why would they change it back to what they changed it from the coaches new this was possible whrn they changed it.

They wanted a break, so they let the chaos happen.  That is something I totally believe because who wants it to make sense to be the day after the tournament ends?  They can have enough staff to do the portal and HS recruiting if they wanted to.

Wondering how many 26 year olds are playing D1? I wouldn't imagine too many. Will be way less naturally now that the extra "covid year" is over..

It’s not really about players vs coaches because like you said they are different (coaches just can’t leave as they are restricted by buyouts).   It’s more like athletes vs regular students — regular students can do whatever they want.

A lot of this is solved is you put contracts in place.  Come up with a standard players contract.  Let the terms of the contract handle it.  They can leave after their contract is up or under certain circumstances as outlined in the contract (like hardship, coaches leaves, etc.).

Maybe a blend of these.  If you've been somewhere 2+ years, you can transfer without sitting out.  Less than that and you have to sit barring mitigating circumstances.  That would curb the every year nonsense while still being flexible.

They aren't regular students now that they are getting a piece of the financial pie.  An accounting student at Kelley doesn't have IU handing them a million dollars+ to be there.

If the kids are going to get paid like that, then they need to slap contract requirements on them.
