And winning the Heisman is in fact out of the realm of possibility. Quote

Popular Post DChoosier Posted September 18, 2024 Popular Post Posted September 18, 2024 Went to the UCLA game with three guys from our IU days and it was the best time I have had at a sporting event in years. Total multi-day blast. We all know how the game went but I want to add a shout out to the IU alumni association for putting on the tailgate. We arrived at the 2:00 tailgate early (1:40) after traveling the 1.5 miles from Old Town Pasadena. The neighborhood on the way to the Rose Bowl/tailgate has winding streets with well tended really nice ($$) homes, plenty of green space and beautiful mountains in the background. Awesome setting. The tailgate, at a golf course adjacent to the Rose Bowl, was $30 a person and included beer, wine, water, sodas, burgers/dogs/salad/fruit/chips/dessert (cash bar for quality hard liquor, Knob Creek etc) We were allowed to grab a beer 20 minutes before the official start time and what do you know….24 oz beers with IU football koozies . Grade A+. They had round “stand up” tables, scattered around, a huge tent with tons of tables for 8, a couple of food stations and multiple bars with very short lines. I talked to a woman associated with the alumni association and she said that in the early planning stages they guessed the event might have 400-500 people but the final tally was over 1,100. The manner in which they took care of the crowd was also an A+. The “Traveling Hoosiers” contingent was also an A+. I kind of thought we would meet primarily California alums at the tailgate but we spoke to a number of attendee’s, including Dean Garrett, that came from IN, FL, CO, TX, MN, MI, KY, NY, AZ, PA etc etc. Really impressive. Fish and Jim Coyle estimated that there were 6-8k Hoosiers at the game. I would lean towards the 8k number as two end zone corners were dominated by IU fans and we also overran the visitors side to roughly the 40 yard line. The cheering for IU completed passes etc, and booing on the sack and targeting calls, was very loud. During the game and after I received unsolicited comments from UCLA fans that they couldn’t believe how well we traveled. At kick-off overall attendance looked light but midway through the first quarter the UCLA side really filled in. The announced attendance was 47k which I find believable (I had guessed 42k). The Rose Bowl holds 92k for football so both end zones, and other less desirable seats, are wide open/empty when you just have 47k/92k. That night Old Town Pasadena, which has a number of bars and restaurants within a roughly 5 block area, was overrun with Hoosiers in red, candy stripe pants and shorts etc. Must have high-fived/fist bumped over 50+ people. Had some great food, drinks at a handful of places and heard some really good live music (featuring a number of rather buzzed dancing Hoosiers LOL). Sometimes things just align. The buzz from Cig, the tailgate, the dominating victory, the Rose Bowl and Old Town Pasadena setting all combined to equal a great event. Stuhoo, Crimson and Cream, Rico and 7 others 9 1 Quote

My fear was spending the coin only to witness an at-Iowa debacle (our opener a few years ago in which we were out of the game in the first quarter). The big win certainly made the game and night in Pasadena a lot more fun as the IU fans were really pumped/joyous. We are a fan base desperate for a good team and I think this is going to be a great year. On a side note, If I was the BT commissioner I would declare UCLA and IU natural rivals so I could go back every other year….LOL. Rose Bowl or West Laffy…hmmm. Rico, thebigweave and Hovadipo 3 Quote
Lebowski Posted September 18, 2024 Author Posted September 18, 2024 @DChoosier a great synopsis of your experience. I was there as well. I didn't do the "IU Bar" tent but did tailgate on the golf course. We had UCLA fans on one side of us and fellow IU fans on the other. I missed the first drive but was walking through my seat section tunnel when we scored our first TD. My crew were a bunch of California alums and they tend to just take their sweet ars time with things. That was probably the only negative thing about the whole trip. I plan on making the trip out there every time IUFB plays in Southern California. Looking forward to experiencing the Coliseum in 2027. I might even do some IUBB games out there as well. Pasadena is a great town out there. Next time you go I also recommend South Bay (the Manhattan Beach/Hermosa Beach area). thebigweave, DChoosier and Rico 3 Quote

As you know they are really nice beaches and beach towns only 20 minutes or so from LAX with each having a little different vibe (Manhattan a little more upscale and Hermosa a bit more laid back). It just so happened that on Sunday there was a large stage on the sand at Hermosa beach with a music festival. Good time. We checked out Newport Beach/OC on Monday.
