That puts us at 10 players, one of whom may or may not be physically able to contribute. Are we going into the season with 9-10 players? What happens when the inevitable injuries hit, or somebody get suspended, etc? We won't even be able to go 5 on 5 in practice without including the walkons. I'll agree that all 7 portal guys don't have to be studs, but we do need to fill out a roster. For what it's worth, Anthony Leal was pretty clearly the 11th man at the start of the season, and he ended up playing 20+ minutes a night by the end. I'm saying you need to put emphasis on 4-5 players (definitely two guards), you can obviously use your 11th, 12th, and 13th scholarship on depth pieces to use in emergency situations. But my comment is in regards to those suggesting that IU needs to sign 7 top portal players just to be competitive next year. I don't see it that way at all. I hope that staff fills 11, 12, and 13 with skilled basketball players who have multiple years of eligibility. Opposed to guys with no skills and a single year of eligibility (not going to name names). Quote

Depending on who goes pro and who leaves we need more. Also depends on your definition of competitive. This year we were not so we need alot imoSent from my SM-A326U using Tapatalk Quote

He had one of the worst injuries a basketball player can have. I cannot think of a single player that’s had it, come back even close to athletic as they were prior to it. Best case is he retained some athleticism and developed a ton of skill and IQ. Count me as one who thinks we get close to nothing from Jakai Newton in his time at IU. Which sucks bc I was really excited about him prior to his injury. What was his injury? I just always heard leg injury. Quote

Some of the best acquisitions in the portal didn't sniff the top 50: Per On3 -Marcus Domask #118 -Daniss Jenkins #139 -Hunter Sallis #194 -Ryan Conwell #182 -Cam Spencer unranked Pick any 2 of those players and IU is soundly in the tournament this year, So you're looking after the fact -- that's the easy way. :) Domask -- 4 years at SIU to Big10 -- turned out, but 3 pt % took a dump. Jenkins -- Followed his coach. Wasn't available? Sallis -- 25% from three before he transferred. Would have fit right in at IU. Did make a big jump this year. Conwell -- still playing at a "lower" level. Spencer -- Would have been a good pickup. Wonder why we didn't get him. Do you really think our staff can do their homework and find potential diamonds in the rough? cybergates and BannerVille 1 1 Quote

The only reports I've seen say "torn meniscus and cartilage issue". He had surgery his senior year of HS, but had to have it redone after he enrolled at Indiana. Sounds like the surgery while in HS didn't help, and may have made it worse. He missed his entire senior year in HS and freshman year at IU. Quote

I'm simply pointing out your false rhetoric that good portal pieces exist outside the top 50. If the staff can't identify or evaluate a couple key guards in the portal this offseason we will almost assuredly struggle again next year. Quote

I think we need at least 8-9 quality Big Ten level players. We currently have 3. Hopefully Cupps develops into #4, but that remains to be seen. I think Leal's ceiling on a good team is 9-10th guy. So I agree we need 4-5 guys to come in and be immediate contributors. I've been looking for examples of teams that had 4-5 first-year transfers in their top 8-9 guys, to see how they did. I'm not aware of any teams like that who were really good. A couple had decent seasons and made the tourney, Florida and Texas Tech. A bunch more missed the tourney. cybergates 1 Quote
