So 3 players for $10 mil and then 9 players for 2-4 mil depending on the rumors? We can’t spend 5 mil on anyone, unless uncle Mark decides to write a check to help pay for it. Thats up to Dolson to go make that happen.

We only need about 7 from the portal, correct?  That's 3 plus sign 4 more at around $1M each.

That 12 -14 mil needs to include Sisley, Acimovic and the 3 incoming freeman as well. So it’s 9 players for 2-4 mil. It’s why a lot of us were saying weeks ago we need more nil funds. An assistant of another school told Rabby last weekend that if you need 5 players in the portal you better have $18 mil of you want to make a run in March. I think k we are going with a budget to make the tournament and build through high school.

If that $14M includes Sisley and the freshman, then yeah we're probably going to need $18M or so or we're probably cooked.

I don't think anyone knows what we can spend. I think it will depend largely with the sequence of the talent acquisition and how promising the talent appears to be along with fit. I couldn't imagine spending 20+ because of the results Kentucky had, but I'm sure the money people understand why we will need to outbid for talent considering our current situation. 

I think if we can them in and it makes sense, the money will be there.

If this staff can’t make the tourney and start building a program with $13M or so, which is #10-15 in the country, we have the wrong staff.  Giving them more money would be a waste.

If IUBB wants more they need to show traction and justify it.

I can't imagine we have money shortages after hiring both Carrs for i'm sure big money and then keeping all the rest of our assistants.  I don't think you spend like that if you have a tight budget for the portal.

Kinda unfortunate we were so mediocre last year. It’s a lot easier to ask more funds after making the tourney than whatever we did last year

Yea, for sure.

But heck, if we are at around $13M this year, that’s up from $10M last year.  Pretty generous after doing diddly poo last season.

I’ve got the grill, let’s start bbqing. I just don’t have high expectations for next year. Just make the dance. Get a roster that can do that. I think the coaching is there. That will at least get some positive momentum going. The 3 I coming freshmen will be good down the line, maybe PAM can contribute as a freshmen. The other 2 need a year of strength and conditioning. So have a decent year and make the dance, and enter next years portal in a much better position to then say on let’s build for a run. Also like to have room on the roster to add 3 more freshmen this fall for the 27’ class.

I think the $12 mil was put out on purpose. Doesn’t mean it needs to stay there but I don’t think it goes above that from day 1. It’s here work with this and we will work on getting more funds if we get into a bidding war.

I think what some forget when they say, sign a pg wing and big at x amount and moneyball the rest….  Those big 3 have to want to come here.  There’s more to these portal transfers than just whatever the school is paying them.  Who are they getting to play with, who are they getting coached and developed by, and how likely are they to make a tournament run?  Why would I sign with IU and it’s 8 unknown players, a program hasn’t been a consistent factor since before I was born.  I’d take a pay cut to play on a top 10 team, with a coach with a track record of developing for the NBA, that will likely be making a deep March run.  Those things might allow me to make more in the NBA than going to IU. To compete, we either need twice the NIL were rumored to have or to get incredibly lucky on lower dollar player evaluations.

Except that $13M this season is probably the equivalent of $7-8M last year.

Nah. Inflation isn’t that near that high.  People are saying we are #10-15 in roster budget.  Last year we were around #15.  High level estimates of course that’s all we can do.

I find it tough to evaluate guys like Harris who barely played at Duke, or Mustaf who played for a god awful team. Feels like these are high variance guys who you could really overpay or get a bargain on. Should be where Ryan Carr earns his money.
