Transfer Portal w IU Interest

Their incoming freshman are currently on their new NIL tours.  Bradshaw is thought to be a North Carolina lean which in part IMO is Ballo being thought of being an IU lean.

The 7'2" Crotation big man from Kentucky is intriguing but he is going to be meeting with Mark Pope before decided if he wants to go back to Kentucky or stay in the portal.

Ivisic should absolutely stay. That’s a great system fit for him.

Still think we see one more transfer if we get two additional guards. Cupps would have a lot of guys in front of him...

I like Trey as the backup point anyway, just my opinion though

Respectfully, why?

Based on the targets and potential gets. It isn't a crazy thought when we have visits from this many guys for one spot. They would presumably all be looking for starter minutes. I seriously doubt the pitch to all of them is commit and compete for one spot. With Rice already committed, some combination of Conwell/Hickman/Carlisle are going to be jockeying for the other spots.

Respectfully, would you rather have Hickman starting over Conwell? I am not sure I would rather have him start over Kanaan. I say that more on the assumption we land Ballo. If that happens we aren't starting 3 guards. Unless the money is so good they can't turn it down, all these guys are looking to transfer and start somewhere. I am just conjecturing on if Woody hits a grand slam with the guards and how the minutes would play out. I want Hickman, but not at the expense of landing Conwell. Now if we only land one of them, the entire discussion is moot. I am just spitballing here.

I've always wondered about this.

If I was a multimillionaire being asked to give to NIL, no way would I not want to decide who the money goes to.

But that's just me.

I’d want to have input for sure. Give me the candidates and the pecking order.  But I’d also ask is this a final four level player? If the answer is no, go get a new list. But I wouldn’t stop donating.

Hickman might have some self awareness -- he's a good college player but not an NBA player.  Some guys chase the dream being G league fodder for years on a $40K to $50K salary not realizing that being a good college player isn't always relevant to what the NBA wants.  Others chase their dreams overseas for years.

The draw for a kid like Hickman of playing in his hometown, getting paid really nicely to do so, and knowing that a backcourt foursome of Rice-Carlyle-Galloway-Hickman is a really solid college backcourt and should lead to wins could be very appealing.  I don't begrudge players getting paid even if they play less minutes.

He would do better playing overseas than the G league but to follow your thought, playing in the Big Ten and at Indiana would be more attractive to overseas teams, I would think, than having played at Cincy.  Now, if he wants to go to Cincy and have a bigger role, I would not fault him for that.

I'm surprised that Hickman would want to compete with Carlyle and Galloway

Either way Hickman choses he is going to have to compete with players. Cincy will be just as crowded at the guard position

Day Day Thomas, James and the kid from Butler are all back and they had some other young guards as well.   If IU really wants Hickman as bad as some are reporting and he still goes to Cincy,  being from Bloomington that would be tough for IU

And likely some fans too. An NCAA pro league isn't that interesting to me either. Add Profit sharing, contracts and collective bargaining and I am gonna fade away as a fan just like I did from the NBA 15 yrs ago.

Back to the transfer portal, I am hoping for a class of Rice, Conwell, Ballo, Malone, Humrichous and maybe Hickman. Not sure how realistic that is, but seems to fill all the needs.

It’s been a pro league under the table for decades now. IU just didn’t participate in that and has faded to below mediocrity.

I’m not sure why a player making money has any effect on a fan liking a sport. That would be like me not wanting to have anything to do with the business you work for because they pay their employees.

Go listen to Joel Klatt’s podcast that dropped this morning. It’s football focused but he goes into NIL in the first segment and provides some solutions that are sound imo. And it’s things that I’ve heard reporters from top football programs talk about. So the ball is moving behind the scenes for sure.

Quite likely that in the future the mid major or low major that 'comes out of nowhere' and starts to become a potential power will be one with the most big money donors.  I think Grand Canyon fits that bill.  They could be become the next Gonzaga.

... Because Grand Canyon is largely an on-line school; over 100,000 attendees with only 550 full-time faculty and a really high acceptance rate (and only 61% freshman to sophomore retention). In other words, it's a university that is driven by a profit model.

That model doesn't necessarily equate to big-time donors that can fund NIL - it's the university that has the big profits. But still, one would think they will find a way.

I would too, if I were them.

Seems like it would have to come with some sort of program access if not actual input. I have wondered if say someone were to tell the AD I will give you 500K specifically for a player(s) they like and no one else or if it is simply added to the pool without any qualifiers on if it can be used.

After seeing Cincy in the NIT, I'm not sure if Hickman is better than any of the guards you listed. Definitely behind James and Simas, I don't think Thomas played. Don't they get CJ Fredrick back too?

No way? lol

I haven't looked this up but he has to be like 28 by now.

Edit: He will be 25 this summer
