He seems perfectly suited as a 6th man. New high-level PG and SG paired with moderate improvement from Mbako & Reneau and a capable Center = NCAA team, IMO. If IU brings in Perkins at point, then a dynamic starting SG is a must. Too many people getting wrapped up in starting lineups and what not. Minute allocation and rotations, especially end of game, tell a far more significant story. I could see someone like Bryson Tucker "starting" over Trey Galloway but Trey playing significantly more minutes. If someone like Huntley-Hatfield committed, I think there's a world where both he and Reneau start the game together but don't end up playing a ton of minutes together simultaneously. JF87 1 Quote

He was a name mentioned by others as a possibility because there were allegedly "Trilly burner" rumors of Roach entering the portal. The guy is a captain at Duke, unless he did not like Scheyer, I don't know why he'd even think about an exit. If he did exit, why would he be referenced with a move to IU? Makes no sense to me. As far as TJ Power goes, that one makes more sense. Duke is bringing in a loaded recruiting class (of course) heavily focused in the frontcourt so Power leaving would make sense. Power was a guy IU really wanted out of high school as a 6'8" power forward. Is he a rim protector? No. He is a modern stretch-four and a good athlete but I've seen him described as a rim protector. I don't know where he fits on IU's current projected roster because he would not be starting over Malik or Mgbako and he's not really a center. If he'd be open to a role as a 20-25 minute guy that we could plug into lineups in relief of Mgbako or Malik or whoever the center is in small ball lineups? That'd be interesting and he certainly has talent. I doubt anything comes of any of it but it was interesting that Eric went out of his way to mention being interested who transfers out of Duke. I don''t forsee Roach coming back next year at all. He does have his covid year or grad years but really see him going to the G league or oversees. As far as Power goes, he is actually one I don't want to see transfer from Duke but if he does, its going to be a big get for the program that picks him up. Think he has high potential. Adillac Posted April 1, 2024 Posted April 1, 2024 I would rather have Gallo run point and IU focus on getting a shooter. Not sure we need a point guard that can't shoot (Xavier) again. Gallo is def not coming off the bench in his 6th year. And Gallo at the 2 doesn't make sense if we have a Perkins. Neither one is a great outside shooter. I think our best bet is Gallo with the ball in his hands, (Cupps as a backup), and get a dynamite shooter at the 2 spot (Newton as backup), then we have Tucker at the 3, Mgbako at the 4 and Malik at the 5. I wouldn't be surprised if Woody plays 2 bigs again and brings Tucker off the bench. Gallo can be our point imo. I think we need to go get a legit shooter, along with obviously front court depth. That wouldn’t be my problem with him. My problem is his switchability in Woody’s auto switching system. His lateral movement is just not good. He looks to me like a small ball 4 in an open system. If he’s switching from say 4 to 3 he’s probably fine. But if he’s on the perimeter switching 1-3 you’ve got a problem. Teams are gonna hunt him, put in ball screen and get him switched on to their best matchup and he is not gonna hold up. Home Jersey, Class of '66 Old Fart, thebigweave and 1 other 4 Quote

Honestly though, could MW have a starting lineup of Great Point Guard ??, Great SG ??, Tucker at the 3, Mgbako at the 4, and Center/Rim Protector. Bring Reneau, Gallo, Cupps, Leal off the bench. Just a thought, but I sure the heck don’t know who we will land if anyone worth a darn. I sure hope so. My guess is that we could see Reneau at the 5, Mgbako 4, Tucker 3, portal sg, portal pg, portal backup rim protecting center. In this instance, the rim protecting center would come off the bench early when we play larger centers. Quote

I also have to disagree with your thought that a Huntely (for example) won't play a lot with Reneau. The last 3 seasons experience indicate otherwise. We may not agree with it, but that is almost certainly what will happen since Woodson likes a traditional C/PF/SF line-up. What I am REALLY hoping is that the PG & SG players skills compliment each other this year, unlike last. Reneau isn't a traditional PF. He played with Ware this last season to maximize on-court talent. Our back court was atrocious last year with very little depth. Get better and deeper at the guard and wing positions and it becomes a non-issue in my opinion. Quote

SamIam Posted April 1, 2024 Posted April 1, 2024 Perkins is a beast, a proven B1G contributor, and from IN. I will never say no to having a bulldog like him on the roster. The biggest issue with him is that his skillset heavily overlaps with Gallo. It's fine if one of them is coming off the bench, but I really want to see us using our NIL to bring in different guys at first. I think the tournament has shown that plenty of teams use a passing big man to run their offense, I would like us to surround Reneau with shooting, he would absolutely torch people without being doubled every time. Go get a game changer at PG, give Conwell whatever he wants when he enters, and fill in the bench with a couple big guys, a backup 4, and maybe a 3rd string PG. I like Walker, he is a true PG, and he has improved a ton. I think he could be a starter as a senior but it is hard to project that initial jump to the B1G. Do we have any chance at at with Javon Small? He would be perfect. One last note - I started watching a lot of Tucker's highlights. I don't think he's is starting right away. I think it's just as likely that he comes off the bench like Tamar and Reneau as Freshmen. He's not a great shooter yet but his form is actually pretty good, most of the problems come from an inconsistent base. Ironically, the ability to make shots off-balance and without a set base helps him be an elite midrange scorer. If he can tweak his base and timing he has real potential from out there.
