sidenote- I personally don't know where Leal and Cupps fit in the rotation if we are looking to win big.  We need Woody to get 2 starter quality guards imo then you have our returning 4 guards.  Interesting....

I would imagine that Cupps fits in as either:

1. A young player that improves a ton and becomes more dynamic, and therein gets a key rotational role, or
2. A ten or less mpg player that doesn't make many mistakes but doesn't impact the game.

I'm just sharing my personal experiences. I've been close to 100 AAU events and 200+ high school basketball games that 3 of my sons have played in over the last 7-8 years and the nostalgia for Indiana basketball just doesn't exist with the younger crowd like it did when we were growing up, assuming you're 40-50 years old. And why would it? None of these kids have ever seen Indiana more than just a middle tier B10 basketball school.

I've coached in close to 50-70 AAU events, coached 150+ HS games. 

There is no nostalgia for anything from our youth. They don't hold anything dear to them other than their phones lol

Of course. But I just think the number of kids who "dream of wearing the candy stripes" (your words not mine) doesn't jive with reality.

He was a freshman thrown into a disjointed style of play.  He has the good  basketball IQ and he plays hard.  I'm happy he is staying.  I only see an up side with him.

I didn't say it was the only dream. I said "AT ONE POINT".... 

You won't convince me every basketball-playing kid in the state, AT ONE POINT, hasn't put themselves in our candy stripes getting ready to play in Assembly Hall. It's different there whether people want to admit it or not.

At one point, which was the premise of the statement, yeah I do think that.  

 

If we were as good as Purdue currently, and Purdue was as bad as us currently.... 

We don't get TJD, Romeo, and we aren't in the running for Mullins and Sisley AT ALL. We aren't the same, Purdue is currently renting the state because of our incompetence.

I see Cupps as a Brad Davison type when he is a Junior and Senior.  He'll be that pesky player that opposing teams don't like.  Cupps may never be a big scorer but will hit enough threes to keep teams honest.

I think this is fair. If he still gets up at the crack of dawn to get an individual workout in he is likely to improve.

Sincere question, what am I missing about Carlyle from Stanford? Several comments along the lines of he "improves IU immediately", but looks very pedestrian to me. Not a great 3pt shooter for certain.

His stats: 11.5ppg, 2.7reb, 2.7ast, 22.8% TO rate, 44% FG, 32% 3P

Not awful for a freshman, but doesn't scream "improvement" to me either. Again, not ripping the kid, just unclear what he offers that I missed. Those stats indicate an average shooter at best, that turns the ball over a fair amount. Never watched him though, maybe he oozes potential?

Carlyle is not a perfect prospect...he is not an elite three-point shooter (although, 32% on decent volume for a true freshman is not dreadful) and he lacks explosiveness. However, I do think he has multiple things that are appealing:

1. Production as a true freshman at a major conference program

2. 13 double-digit scoring games against conference competition, including five of 16 points or more

3. Excellent FT shooter suggesting there should be an expectation of progress as a perimeter shooter

4. Not a bad defender

5. His lack of elite explosiveness or athleticism means there is a real chance he plays 3-4 years in college. If that ends up being the case, he very well could progress into an all-conference guard

He's not my favorite portal prospect but I can easily see a backcourt of...hypothetically...Carlyle plus Conwell starting with Galloway, Leland Walker, Cupps and Newton being quite successful.

If he gives up open threes and straight line drives to the basket too, then he's the perfect IU player. Sign him up. LOL
