They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

Recommended Posts

ISP is being clear ( to me at least, and I think to Chris) that he is referring to Gallo.
If this season really slides from here on out, I could even see Gallo pull the seldom attempted "reverse Jimmy Chitwood."
"If Coach stays, I go."
Yeah oh and one more thing "coach stays I go". I just watched it again last weekend.

You're playing' Cedar Knob tomorrow, ain't nobody knows them better than me.  They got no head toppers - a bunch of mites, run ya off the boards.  You got to squeeze 'em back in the paint, make 'em chuck it from the cheap seats. Watch that purgatory they call a gym - no drive, 12 foot in.  That'll do."

The only way I would fire a coach is if I knew who I had in the bag to follow him. Going after one guy and scrambling when he turns us down is not the best way to go about hiring a great coach.

Ya but theres evidence to suggest over a long period that is how Isiah and Bucker operate.. LOL

There are dudes who got injured like Kyrie or Michael Porter Jr who have ended up with good to great careers. But they were good for the most part in the games they played. Dudes like Harry Giles, Skal Labissiere, Dariq Whitehead, Cheik Diallo, BJ Boston etc... they just don't make it. And why would they? They couldn't make it in college either. Hopefully someone out there let's Mgbako know that.

Gunn has been that way most of the season. He pouts way too early. I would have never put him back in the 2nd half against OSU. He very rarely looks into the huddle when he is not in the game. Dude needs to go to the MAC and play all he wants

I’ve noticed that too and Banks hasn’t had good body language either.  Gunn thinks he’s better than what he is, but he would be decent playing for Ball State.  Banks just needs to transfer to some place closer to home where he might get more playing time.  I can’t believe both of them pout like that, it’s their own fault because they are B10 level CBB players

Some perspective; Woody has publicly been pretty tough on X and Gallo as leaders. But after the Ohio State game, Woody specifically called out Gallo as providing exactly the type of leadership the team needed.

ISP said he heard a less than excellent vibe weeks ago, but Woody changed his vibe toward Gallo after Iowa and OSU.

Winning cures everything; we don't need to win every time out, but we need to win enough so that key players believe in the direction of the program.

I don't even know if he is MAC level.

So you're not allowed to recruit in the spring? Dang it I hadn't heard that the NCAA changed the rules. Feel bad for all of those seniors who haven't picked a school yet. DWS

Yeah, nothing like waiting till last call to find the person to take home.  :)

Archie’s first year that went 9-9 won 7 games against the bottom 4 teams with 0 wins against the top 4 teams.

This is Woodson's THIRD year (not first) with mostly his players... so there's that to consider.

Which sucks because it basically guaranteed that any big time recruit who struggled in college, amounts to nothing in the NBA. But no one is going to tell any of these guys that. It's just "you're the next superstar."

Woodson said something to TJD.  Kid turned out pretty good.

Maybe but if his mind is made up it won't matter. Alot of these guys seem fine going to the G league for awhile

Yeah, I have seen our G-league team working out at our park district facility.  No thanks.

I agree. I think Woody will get year 4 and to be honest I think it's deserved despite the **** season we are having.

With that said, I think there is a higher quantity and quality coaches available now than in any previous time we were looking and I think it is very likely that 4-5 of them would accept pretty quickly.

Either way,  I hope we load up this off season and hit the Final 4 next year.

toMAto, toMAHto... Woodson getting a 4th year (probable) vs deserving a 4th year are vastly different things...

Yep having down years can happen in year 1,2, 3, 4 or even 10, 11.    No linear path on a coaches success or failure each year.   Every coach is different

My problem with this simply that Woodson set it up to fail... he did not address the guard issue AND left a scholarship open... that scholarship could have been used on a serviceable guard to help fill the gap... but he chose not to do that...

Especially given x was coming off a major injury and Newton as well. Turns out both are not playing. Just mind blowing leaving that grant open

Doesn't matter when MM leaves, it's always going to be uphill for him sticking in the NBA. No offense but he's the least athletic 5* I have ever seen. He's 6'8 and plays like he's 6'2. I've never seen a player of that height get beat up at the rim the way he does. But he's also good a very smooth shooting stroke and if he actually gave a **** on defense I think he could potentially be a 2nd unit 3 and D type player. Always a role for that in the NBA. But coming back to IU or transferring to another school is never going to fix his lack of athleticism.

Yeah bad year all around.   We talked about it before the season even started that it was a gamble and not filling the scholly was malpractice.   Filling a roster with 6 PF or centers was not a good look.   Good news is nowadays even if a coach and staff screw up a year it’s only a transfer portal season from flipping it if a coaching change isn’t made

It seems like Woodson will get his 4th year and an opportunity to improve the roster in the off season.
Here’s a couple things I’m hoping for:

1. No playing time promises to transfers.   I’ve wondered at times this season if some of the odd lineups have more to do with guaranteed playing time than a reward for hard work?  Not sure.  I really liked the 4 guards with Ware during the Iowa game.  The most driving room we’ve had all season… That, and Iowa’s guards couldn’t stay in front of a gum ball machine. So who knows if it is more effective?  Either way, playing time promises limit chemistry and experimentation.

2. A cohesive staff.  I don’t want to go into much here, but we need our staff to get on the same recruiting page.  I’m hoping we have at least one assistant transition this year.

3. Recruit kids who have a fundamental foundation and win.  Potential, potential, potential.  I don’t like that word anymore.  We need winners.  And when kids win at a high level, it typically means we don’t have to teach help side fundamentals the first 2 months of the season.

4. Get a shot doctor into Cook Hall.  Mercy.  Just mercy.  I never thought I would see Indiana have a team captain whose guide hand could tickle his goatee after he shoots.  Even if it’s just for aesthetics and beauty, can’t we clean up the form?

I agree with most of that. His shot is what he has the rest probably can't be fixed, except the defense. No idea how they got him ranked the 10th best player in the country. Heck they had xavier booker ranked 11th and he doesnt even sniff the floor l.
